: 360 vs. 350 for an '88 YJ

I have been looking into swapping in the AMC 360 to take the place of my 258. Everyone that I have talked to, outside the boards at offroad.com, says to go with a Chevy 350. OOOOH the popular 350...it isn't Jeep though! I will need to get adapters to fit the 350 up to my TF999 tranny, correct? My reasoning for the 360 is:
1. it is in the Jeep family
2. I can get a whole waggie or g-waggie for under a grand
3. thus, I can also take advantage of the TF727 and axles
4. because it is an AMC setup in the waggie, the swap can be done with few mods
sounds good and cheap to me. What are your thoughts? Anything I should look out for when doing the swap? I will be rebuilding the engine and possibly tranny myself. Sound good? Thans a bunch!

well i did just a swap like this last year i swaped a 360 in to a 89 yj with a 258 and a auto i liked it it was the easiest swap ever i have also done a 2.5 yj to 350 and i never liked it as much as the 360 just liked it bettter and the 360 was so much cheeper the only thing is ya half to build motor mounts for a 360 but i found that to be easy so go for the 360 but outher will tell ya diffrent

Wouldn't I just be able to cut a slit into my original 258 motor mounts and call it good?

Sorry...got another question. I was thining of going with stock exhaust manifolds. What benifit would headers have for the 360, besides sound high rpm gains? And what gain at higher rpms would there be?
Thanks

The AMC has advantages, like putting 401 shit on it. But I plan to put a tree fiddy in my CJ. I'm looking for a 350ci - SM465 - NP205 set up with 12 bolt front and rear. ALl of which will be going into the CJ. If you find an old farm romping truck with dents, rust and windows missing, I could see picking one up for $1500 or less. If it had a TH350, I'd still buy it, cause those are awesome auto's. They are in the paper all the time. A lot of people don't know the donor capabilities of trucks like that. Plus in the long run, compare prices with parts that are commonly replaced between the AMC's and Chevy's. Chevy parts are cheap as hell and grow on trees in a junkyard. My local junkyard currently has one wagoneer, and it is so stripped that there is more dirt then there is Jeep parts on it. Here is a link that is a good info source for AMC's though. http://www.froadin.com/engines.html
The sections are on the left of the screen. On my puter the links don't show up until I run my mouse across them. I've heard that the AMC engines have weak internals due to the material they are made from. They CANNOT withstand much high reving, which in my wheeling areas, is necessary.
Dats!....Dats wat I think.

I would go with a fuely 350, any day.
I personaly wouldnt spend the time to swap a non EFI engine.
Plus if you go with an SBC, and happen to have an engine let go, you could find an affordable one, almost any day of the week, at junk yards across the country and swap in a replacement over the course of a weekend.

Thanks guys. H8, I plan on putting a tbi on there when i get it. The 350 would be such a pain to swap in. I will need adapters and new motor mounts.

I bought a jeep with a built 401, the guy could have built 2 350s for the same price. I would go with a 350 all day long.
