: Steering help YJ VS. Waggy pitman arms

Problem: I have a ford 9'' front axle w/ YJ D 30 knuckles w/ MORE crossover steering kit. Why YJ knuckes? Got the axle cheap, complete, and will someday go with 60 outers. Anyways My steering really stinks on flat ground let alone when I am flexed up front. I almost max out all my steering when I drop my Pass tire down. I have a drop pitman YJ arm and run the heim on the bottom (like MORE says to do) My tie rod and drag link are flat.

I would like a cheap easy fix until I have time/ cash to work on getting 60 inners and outers on.

I was thinking that a longer pitman arm would give more stoke lenth. Is a waggy arm longer? Or even a stock YJ arm?

Any suggestions would be great

I can't see why you'd want a dropped pitman with a cross over steering like that. Go back to the stock pitman arm and I bet it's fixed.

If I use a stock pitman arm I will take the drag link out of parallel.... Isnt that what high steer is for to keep the drag link and tie rod =?

Get a pitman from an astro van, (Safari, same thing) It is completely flat. and will give you the extra levarage. As you are cross over anyways it should work very well.

Good luck

I used a pitman arm off of a '99 F250. I can turn lock to lock at full flex.

Thanks do you fordwillys or Red90YJ have any pics of your steering?

Also will the pitman arms go on a stock wrangler box?

I had a dropped pitman in my YJ and did a d60 swap in w/cross over and the stock arm was too short. It wouldn't turn the wheels far enough. I happen to have a waggy arm layin around that was at least an inch longer. Now it turns like it should but I had to cut the track arm bracket off the frame cause even my stock pitman arm must have had SOME drop and the totally straight waggy hit the bracket. (I haven't run a track arm on it for ever anyway)

Well if I was 1'' longer it would be 1'' better. Dont worry I wont post Pics.

So it looks like a longer pitman arm will aid quite a bit. I ahve seen waggy, F250's and Safari vans used. Anyone have pics or recomendations, lenths of each

I went out and found my old stock length (I think) dropped arm it was 5-1/2" or there abouts. The waggy arm appears to be 7" so it's longer than I thought. I wish mine had a little more drop than it does because my drag link has a little more incline than I'd like but the dropped arm was actually too far once I went to cross over steering and caused the drag link to actually go up to the knuckle. Some where in the middle would be better but this one was free so I'll live with it.

so a waggy arm will work on a YJ box correct. I have heard that they are clocked differently? Wildgoose any pics. or anyone else running a waggy, F250, or safari.

http://pics.montypics.com/wildgoose/2004-08-27/1093663268_waggypitman.jpg Here's mine as it sits now. I would like it to have a little more drop than it does and like I said earlier I had to hack off my track arm mount for it to clear. I'm right in the middle of mounting up a hydro assist ram this weekend. That's the other drawback to going to a longer pitman. Loss of leverage. When I swapped in the D60 the arm on the top of the knuckle is longer, thus the problem with the stock pitman being to short, it wouldn't turn lock to lock or even hit the springs but it had great power. The waggy arm gave me the movement, but I'm back to what it ought to feel like with stock power steering and 39.5's. :( The ram assist should clear that up in a jiffy though!

I had a prob with my Yj and Turning. I fought and fought with it. I found a stock Wagoneer was about an inch longer than a Cj and almost 2 inches longer than stock YJ. I tried to Use a ford arm but the taper was to big. Same spline count but run all the way up the spline. I just had a custom one made that was 3/4 inches longer than wagoneer, with a three inch drop ran the tie rods behind the axle and added Hydro boost.. WOW I can turn on a dime any time.
