Ok so I'm wheeling and dealing with a guy over some axles out of my town so I need to be specific on what I'm looking at before I buy...and I can't find what I'm looking for.
Ok I can pick up either a set of :
1979 Bronco axles - D44 fr 9" rr 3.54 gears both are 67"
1978 Bronco axles - D44 fr 9" rr 4.09 gears both are 67"
Is there a difference in these years? I know they come with 10" drums unless they have a big bearing kit and then it's 11" ?!?
What is the WMS to WMS width? I am assuming these are full width axles judging by the pictures I've seen of these year broncos. I'm trying to set this up
for my TJ...not worried about if they are full width just want an idea of how much wider they will be...
I'm "in negotiation" right now so any info greatly appreciated ASAP. the 4.09 axles would be better as they gear closer to my needs, so I could put off gearing for a bit and get them under the jeep.
Edit: found width 67" fr and rr for fullsize.

They should be a HP 44 unsure of width, sorry. Should be a 28 spl nine. Have you tried searching. There have been a bunch of threads on these axles.

the front will be an HPD44 65 inch WMS I would pay 150-200$
rear 31 spine 9 inch, 65inch WMS I would pay 75$
Your stock TJ is about 61 or 62 WMS, so its not that much wider

IIRC, '78's had 1/2" wheel studs & '79 had 3/8";)
Also, FWIW, '78 & '79 HP D44's have cast C's (not easily moved or removed). Earlier had welded C's (very easy to move or remove).

Front axles I know a little. Both are close enough not to really say, however I'd go for the 4.09 gears.
Now, what are you plans with the front axle? Are you going to run the Ford coil set up? Then these are good axles.
Want to run the TJ style system and weld on some brackets? Then I say pass on them. They are made of two tubes on each side, and thus you'll need to re-tube them (My opinion and I'm sticking to it.)
Follow my sig and read the Dana 44 stuff, some info for you there.

I was going to go with a Rubicon express bracket kit...what about this re tubing, I've heard
there is a 77 d44 front...it has welded on c bracket...dunno what this is...but the 78/79 have a cast c bushing mount so it MAY!?! be messy to clean up?

Broncos (78-9) Have 3.50, not 3.54 ratio. (4.10/4.09 too)
Both 78-9 have 1/2" studs
78s use 1310 series u-joints, 79s 1330 series.
9" should be 31 spline, tapered roller bearings

if u can find a f-250 front it will be 1 pc tubes with spring perches that can be cut off easy!mines a 78//then just slap the outers on

I've never re-tubed and axle. I've seen post about a cheap shop rate of $300.
