: Snorkel on a carb?

Okay, this is something I've been thinking about for a while....is this even possible?

Now, I was led to believe it wasn't, because the only applications you ever see snorkels for is fuel injection. But perhaps that's cause the air intake on those motors is usually right off to the side nearby to the fender.

But anway, I just assumed you couldn't do it with a carburator, wouldn't get enough air flow or something. (You'd think if it WAS possible to do one, somebody would have done it already)

WELL, the other day as I paged thru my Leon Rosser catalog, I noticed something that I must have looked RIGHT AT several times and never saw. Its a 'snorkel' kit for the Weber carb.

(You can see it here, scroll all the way to the bottom, it describes it, and then you click on the link. Its a PDF file, so you need Acrobat.)

Well, why the hell not? Why couldn't you put a snorkel on a carb? Does anyone know the logistics/mechanics of why or why not?

Well, with the late model Jeeps, the air intake is held on with a hose clamp, most carbs use the center bolt, that probably why theres not a lot of aftermarket here. But in the top truck challenge, everybody hangs some sort of a snorkle on thier junk. Your engine won't know its there, just mack sure its not to small of a diameter. Go for it, and post pic's when yer done!

I made a snorkel for my carburated Jeep three years ago, no problem with that. The snorkel tubing is 3 inches.

the best way to do that is to go get a flexable hose and run it straight off the carb, cut the center of the hood a ways back towards the cab, and just run it up the center of the windshield to the top of the cab pointing backwards. i have seen somereally cool ones done like this, and since they aren't hard plastic, they are easy to route into the cab if you have to, or point elsewhere when you have water getting into the engine.

My dad and I built a hose kit for his EB. He just installed a 351 and needed to build a filter or cut his hood. I found a air intake kit from a 5.9 Grand and we mounted it to his four barrel. (Looks like a factory Job..) We found a chart for what surface area the filter had to be at the operating RPM and the filter is big enough to supply all the air he needs. I think all late Jeep V-8 motors have the same air intake so it shouldn't be hard to find. Now you know how to go from the carb to the filter. Now all you need is the filter to snorkel... Need a pict? Send me a PM and I will email you one......
