: Flushing fuel system got a ?

I pulled this from an old thread

It slipped my mind and I never drained the old fuel out of the tank before I poured new stuff in.
I've put appx 10 gallons in the tank and I've got the thing running a few times

PS: I don't know exactly how much old gas was in there, but my guess (from listening) is probably less than 1.5 gallons

I'm gonna be dropping the tank and cleaning it out. I was told to use mineral spirits (I figure a gallon or two right?) and a final rinse with gasoline.

I know this is the problem since I just put ANOTHER carb on (rebuilt by me) and ran clean gas, through the fuel pump to the carb, straight out of a 5gal can. and it ran AWSOME!!

I've flushed a tank before on a chevy malibu (also a 78 like my scout) and one problem I ran into was finding a new "O" ring seal on top of the tank where you take the pick-up tube/filter out, I spent a week looking for one and never found one, I just never "FILLED" it again.

Here's my new question.

Does anyone know the part number to this seal, or does it even exist on a scout gas tank. any info would be good, like where have you found one, was it just a reg. "O" ring, did it work....etc.

Thanks guys

Also are there any unusual problems I might run into when taking off a ScoutII tank. Any tip would be helpful.

Don't break the J-bolts holding the straps in. :)

Dunno about the O-ring.. I try not to fill it all the way - it still weeps a little out of the top.

Not much else to say.. it's pretty straightforward.

Very straightforward...Thanks

I tried to take it easy with those J-bolts but I STILL broke one of them, luckily I had my welder on hand and just welded new threading onto it no problem.

The o-ring for that sending unit has a square cross section with a groove around the inside. It slips over the sending unit disc, the squishes down with that cam-ring thing. You need them both, or you'll leak. Add ignition, and :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

I'd take that sending unit down to NAPA or similar and have them match it up. The OEM sending unit was made by Chrysler (the pentastar log was on the last one I put in)
