: FJ-40 Removing factory roll bar questions

I'm Herculining this weekend and want to remove the factory roll bars. How do I separate the full bar from the half side ones? I've removed the 2 bolts that hold the clamp. The bars have a lot of padding and tape on them. Is there another bolt to remove that could be under the padding, or am I just not pulling hard enough?

I paid 90 bucks for a gallon and the kit, and it put i really nice thick coat on my tub and seems to be really durable, napa has it on sale for 69.95 for the gallon but you dont get the "kit" which consist of a pos paint brush, textured roller which you can get at any hardware store for 2 bucks and a paint can opener lol pretty high tech shit man !!!!

Your rollbar should come apart. Maybe the padding & tape is holding it. I would throw the stock rollbar away & purchase an aftermarket one. Stock is weak.

Now granted the story that I am about to tell is about a Line X experience and not a Herculiner one. I was at Line X last week and this Jeep guy was there crying because he had had them spray over his roll cage mounting pads instead of taking the cage out as they requested. Well seems 2 weeks later he flipped the Heep and smashed the little cage and can't remove the cage to replace it because the Line X has sealed it in. IMHO if you can ditch the stock cage, I just scrapped a cage that was half done because it was based on the stocker and good for about one good rollover.

I agree that the stock roll bar is not trust worthy. If you are going
to wheel this rig then I recommend you give some serious thought about replacing that hoop and adding better supports to the rollbar, especially if your are at the painting stage.

but...you were asking about another topic....:(

Thanks for the replys.
The padding/tape was covering up the last bolt. Someone pointed me to http://sor.com (page 244) that has a great stock roll bar diagram.
I definitely wanted to take out the roll bar so I could clean up around it. Plus it's going to be a lot easier to re-pad it later on if I can easily remove the whole thing.

I would like to upgrade the cage at some point, and add front pieces. What aftermarket bars (full or front kit) would you recommend?

BTW, H&R Block has coupon books that include a $20 off at PepBoys. That brought the Herc kit down to $80.

I definitely have to disagree that the stock bar is a POS. I have tested the stock bar on two seperate occasions. The first I broke the sector shaft on the POS stock steering box went sideways @ 45 MPH and then did a barrel roll down the pavement. The truck landed on the bar hard and I walked away, better yet alittle pit of porta power and I straighten the bar.

The second time I tested it again was on pavement, I was going into a tight clover leaf off ramp. I down shifted to third from hi gear and clamped on the brakes to discover they weren't working. I did not make the turn, the left front hooked the curb and the truck rolled end for end from the left front to the right rear and the stock bar keep me alive. The body was wasted, well it was still better looking than Lance's old body, but I walked away and was still able to drive the truck.

Of all you people who thinks it a POS how many have tested it?? I guess it is possible I was just lucky, but I am still breathing and thats what a roll bar is suppose to do keep the occupant alive. I would worry more about floating crap like tools boxes, jacks,
CD cases anything that has weight becomes a missle in a rollover of any speed

I thought Chevy made hi horsepower motors to test the rollbars in cruisers...when in doubt gas it. Never have put it over off road, those two times where enough of a E ticket . Anyone can roll off road, you really have to worked at it to have it happen on road and avoid the ticket.
