: 305 Tuned port OK engine???
Jeeper 01-26-2002, 05:48 PM Got a little dissapointed today. I was going to take out my SB400 and swap in what I thought was a 350 TPI out of an Iroq Z...turns out that its actually a 305. I'm really not familliar with this power plant...can anyone give me some clues as to torque, HP. The engine is in good shape according to the compression test (130-140) and I really want injection. The 400 is next to impossible to cool and the carb drives me nuts on inclines.
Should I go for it or not? If not...Why? There is no cost for the swap so frogskins have no play in the decision.
BTW, I plan on keeping my TH350 although the 305 has a 700R4 behind it...well actually....just a new output shaft and a new adapter to the Atlas....Hmmm?

CJ5-Man 01-26-2002, 05:59 PM How does your 400 do offroad? If it isn't driving you nuts by stalling on hills I'd keep it. I think if I were in your position I'd rather buy the parts to put regular old TBI on the 400 than have the fancy 305 TPI for free.
Jeeper 01-26-2002, 08:25 PM The 400 is a Heat monster and I have not quite been able to dial it in with the carb to hold on an incline (ie. Rocky dry waterfalls). It needs a valve Job and the carb needs to be re-tuned (again). I can get it to work fine but I have this other option sitting around for no $$$. I can do the swap and the wiring and the computer work will be done by a good friend who build race engines.
I just don't know squat about the 305 and was hoping for a little input on weather or not this is/was in fact a good engine. If the general concesus is yes, I'll make the swap and run it. If not, I'll work with the 400. I would prefer not to spend $1200-2000 more on the 400 to get injection though.

Jeeper 01-26-2002, 08:27 PM Actually, would I be better off asking this on the General 4X4 board? If so, I'll delete this thread and re-post.

YJ4LIFE 01-26-2002, 08:36 PM 305 TPI is 230 HP and 300 TQ stock. Why not rebuid the 400? Put a TBI on the 400 with a single plane carb intake.
High5 01-27-2002, 06:24 AM if you've already got the 305 and it is in good shape then just put it in. yeah it's not a 350 but if you already have it run it. it is already injected and that is what you want. just my op
Mr.RatBastard 01-27-2002, 08:00 AM I agree...if your 400 doesnt run that great you will probably see an improvement w/the 305.Not a bad engine at all.I wouldnt go get 1 on purpose(only becouse I would shoot for 350) But if I had it I would definitly run it.Before anybody gets overexcited about the 305 possibly being a improvement over a 400,If it's a 400 cubic inch turd then thats all it is.
It would be hard to polish that turd. If you have the 305 it runs, and is cheap go for it. You will have more of a motor that most and it will work off road.
TPIJeep 01-27-2002, 09:18 AM I run TPI on a SB 415 and is does great, the Tuned Port on a 305 will have lots of low end grunt and will serve you well. If you decide to put it on the 400 the only thing you will have to make sure of is that you have a Cam with 270 degrees of duration or less, 9.8:1 CI or less and the desire for a torque monster. Since you have the whole TPI setup all you have to do is slot the two center bolt holes on the intake and bolt it on your 400, then get a custom PROM burned for about 140 bucks and Vehicle speed sensor and you are set. www.jimsperformance.com did my PROM and it works fine for me. As far as cooling goes I run a 27.5x19 Griffin Alum and dual 10" fans to keep mine cool!

YJ4LIFE 01-27-2002, 12:36 PM a 400 chevy is not a turd! Are you guys on crack????????
Mr.RatBastard 01-27-2002, 12:43 PM A chevy 400 is not.....HIS 400 IS .What are you smoking ?:smokin:
hy_desert_4wheeler 01-28-2002, 06:24 AM Run the 305 it will be much easier to cool and will bolt right in. Wiring the FI will be the hardest part. You will also need to plumb a return line to the fual tank if you dont already have one. You will have a much better running engine slight mileage improvementand much improved starting. In a JEEP it will have more than enough power.
Jeeper 01-28-2002, 08:00 AM Alrighty then, 305 it is. My 400 is not a turd, it just needs a valve job and I don't like being carbed for the terrain I run (rocks, rocks and more rocks). I have $0.00 in the 305, can do the swap myself, including the wiring. The only thing I' need help on is the computer which will be taken care of by a friend.
Mr.RatBastard 01-28-2002, 09:17 AM Overheats, needs a valve job and runs bad due to carb problems....Thats what I call a turd.Feel free to call it whatever you like.:)
jp junkie 01-28-2002, 11:36 AM The 305 TPI with 700r4 is a good combo. The 700 has a nice low first gear.:smokin:
