O.k. so newbie isn't too far behind my name but I tried the search no luck.
I have an 71' FJ40 but I want to do a 3/4 ton powerbooster change out(my stock one took a s*#t). Is there any easy bolt in swaps out there? Chevy-Ford junk yard finds?
Any help I can get would be great.
Thanks guys/gals

as in, brake booster?

I'm not aware of anything domestic that will work, but seem to recall a few people using minitruck or supra boosters with good luck....anyone?

Mini truck, only like $110 from adavanced auto, or 20-30 from the junk yard. I cannot remember specs, but I think the last one I ordered was for a 84 mini. The mini booster is cool because it is small like the early fj booster. Makes for more room for v8, or tbi on the strait six.The stock master works, or you can use a mini master. The mini master, uses one resivor, with a hose feeding the front circut.

I just put in the booster/master from a 95 4Runner. Be sure you get the spacer between the booster and the firewall (I had to make one). I run an automatic, so I don't know if it would clear the clutch master.

How much spacer???

Yoda, does the '71 have the firewall brace I have on my '66 that I don't want to cut? I've been looking to swap in a non boosted S10 master, but have been cautioned about needing a booster for the front discs.

I use a '94 Supra booster. I had to shorten the pushrod just a little, but that was just a couple of minutes at the grinding wheel. The Rockstomper MasterCylinder (with the adapter) bolted right up. Great setup, good pedal feel and all that.

71 does not have the firewall brace like the '60's FJ40's do.
I am running a chevy motor with a later 70's dual booster on my '71 with disks. works really well, but is longer than the stocker '71 booster whcih is shallow like the supra one.

btw, (and this is just my opinion) I wouldnt fret too much about cutting that brace. Having more braking power, and dual brake master cylinders (seperate ones for the front and rear) are WAY more importaint than the last foot of the brace. .. my .02.

I would agree, Dustin, if I had cut it BEFORE I painted the firewall. Call me a pussy, but it looks so nice, it was a biatch to paint and I'd rather find an alternative.

I have seen booster talk on here before and wanted to mention that it is not hard to modify any booster to fit the firewall.

I am in the middle of doing it for my car right now and have seen it done with success in the hot rod world.

Anyway build a spanner wrench to fit the firewall side of booster
Hold MC side in a vice
Twist off back using spanner wrench
Modify Bolt pattern
Put back together

If anybody is interested in pictures let me know and I will buy a star and post up. The pictures are of a chevette booster being modified to work in a chevy II.

I took out my TLC booster and MC and installed a Chevy S10 booster and a Corvette MC. I just drilled the holes in the firewall and brackets for the Chevy booster and then I cut down the booster push rod and made an adapter to fit the brake pedal.

Arndog....I would like to see some pics on how to take a booster apart and/or change bolt patterns or push rods.

P.S. I still have the stock TLC booster if anyone is interested in buying it.

Since my pm box is now full of inquiries about this, here is is a pic I shot just before I tossed Erik's into the box. One of those 'reference' photos you don't stop and think you might have to show someone. :barf:

Perhaps Erik will grace us with an installed shot. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until I get the new ones in and do a proper photo shoot for the website.

Where's the pic?

Anyway, my 71 does not have the brace. My spacer was about 1/2". My neighbor used 4" square tubing to build a spacer for his with the brace.

COOL TECH! Thanks for the pics on that.

Degnol: Don't be scared of "non-boosted" four wheel discs. Corvettes came that way in the 70's, and plenty of comp guys, including spaceghost here run that way. In fact, he used an S-10 booster, and has the install documented on his website, whatever that is. I believe he has since switched to a wilwood manual system with two manual master cylinders he uses as a cutting brake...

Degnol

It was Spaceghost's article that inspired me, since it addresses the firewall brace. He did have a problem with the rod falling out of the master on release and built a HDPE or Delrin guide to fix it.
BTW, does anybody know the difference between a JB-2 and a JB-3 braking system? When I go to the parts counter and ask for a reman master for the '88 S-10, they always ask that and the difference is that the price is twice as much. I know they came cast in iron or aluminum, but I don't groc the JB-2-3 thing.
I drove MG's and BMW's with non-boosted brakes and I agree that they should be OK. After spacing out for the brace, I'm just about into the carb/aircleaner if I use a Booster/master combo.
Chef, Columbia is safe for the moment, Graham is asleep upstairs. Heh.

John, it is Warden's design, but somebody else is actually making it, I think.
Kinda pricey @120.

Marks off road booster adapter pics
booster clearance to clutch master
I used an FJ62 booster if that makes a reference point. There are many other sizes and shapes of boosters out there that will work as well.. Just happened to be the one in the garage i had available. FJ62 master cylinder as well..

Erik,
I'm gonna have to see that in person! Looks like it will fit, but not as much "leftover" space as with the non-boosted S-10. Looks like both the front circuit and the rear circuit run to the passenger side, can you confirm?
Can I drive that thing when I come up there?
Thanks all,
Ed :)

All Cruisers I"ve owned and just about any toyota style truck master has the outlets on the Drivers side. And my lines run to the pass side for the drop to the frame using a junction from a later dual system FJ40. Did that answer your question?

As far as driving the 45.. Not currently an option unless you stay in the driveway. Sorry, not insured or tagged right now... And I have a sargent that lives across the street. But when it's insured and tagged, Yes. Currently the 45 is second on the list of trucks getting attention. Just having it mobil is enough for me right now.. i have a really small garage which sucks! Have to pull the 45 out to work on the 40..

Food for thought.. Sherpa will be up Tuesday evening at my place. we're heading to L.A to meet up with Mark aka 65swb Thursday in L.A.. So if your coming by that'd be a great time to meet one more Cruiserhead..
