OK, I am looking to start scrapping that 35c thing on my rear, and am thinking ford 9". What would the best vehicle be to get this from (width/strength/splines)?? I tried searching and either I'm an idiot and didnt put in the right terms, or I'm an idiot and didn't put in the right terms.
Any advice on doing this swap at all? If I am going the wrong direction, let me know here....
I figure it's stronger then the 8.8 and D44's are so darn overpriced, this should work out for me.

I think the 8.8 is a better solution for you. Out of an explorer you can get them stock with discs & 31 spline shafts. With that under your jeep with a near stock 4.0 youre good to 35" tires at least.

just about any 9" can be modified to be STRONG. It sounds like you need a fairly strong axle but nothing spectacular. Any of the axles listed in the link can be modified to be stronger than your needs now and strong enough in the future. The thinner housing models need reinforcement. A small bearing will be probably be strong enough, but even if it isnt you could convert it to a full floater :D

Save your money and go this route. Once your ready to step it up and go bigger you will want to get 60's and say good bye to the over priced 9" you built.

If you get tired of looking and can't find the one you want just get one out of a fullsize truck. You can find those all day long and it'll have 31 spline stock. Cutting the tubes isn't hard and isn't expensive to have done. Run a 33 spline spool and have Moser make some axles for you. Or you have the stock shafts cut down or keep it full width. If you break that your the man and I'll gladly drag you off the trail. Truss the housing and shave it. Personally I'd run leaves in the rear to ease the install and push the axle back. The one problem with the 9" is the low pinion making an ugly driveline angle. For its strength its pretty light, the pinion is strong, the 3rd member comes out, and parts are cheap and plentiful. :smokin:

How much money do you have. Call up Moser and tell them you want a 40spl 9" and give them the dimensions, Call up randy's R&P and have him set you up with a spooled 3rd member and you'll never look back.
