Hi, I have a dana 44 front out of an old travelall. I am hoping you guys can answer a few questions regarding this axle;

First, are the axleshafts the same length as a chevy dana 44?
2nd, do these come with 0* caster just like the scout?
3rd, they are drum brake, open knuckle, does this mean there will be any irregularities that would make them undesirable (ie they have coarse splines or something)

Thanks.

What are you planning on doing with it? Unless you are planning on putting it back in a Travelall, you would probably be better off finding a Chevy 44,open knuckle with discs.

yep, better off going with chevy stuff, cheaper and lot easyer to upgrade

If its open knuckle, drum brake, then its out of a '73.

Shafts are different lengths than Chevy, but they do use the same U-joint so upgrade parts can be made/gotten.

They have caster, as to the exact number I can't tell you, you will have to bolt it in and see what you get.

Splines should be 30 and 19 (same as GM), good news is the pass. knuckle is flat-top, but the spindle bolt pattern is slight offset a couple of degree's that make GM style brakes a little less of a bolt on. But the knuckle can always be re-drilled.

The width is less than GM, something more in the range of 64-65" rather than 1/2T GM at 67"

That Dana 44 looked better in the Travlall anyway. :D

Well, don't worry, a Travelall wasn't scrapped in favor of the axles, the guy just put in chevy stuff so he could go crossover steering, disc brakes, etc. The spline count was the main thing I was worried about. It will probably be a while before I ever go discs in the front anyway.

The axles were free, so I think I will put them under my cj. I figure I can always go chevy stuff in the future if need be anyway, but for now they are good enough to wheel for a while. I have no $$$ right now, so spending money on Chevy stuff is out of the question.

On the rear dana 60, out of the same vehicle, is it 35 spline? I know it is full float, but not sure about spline count. Thanks.

Also, what years travelall are the axleshafts compatible? It'd be nice to start looking for spares now.

Hey noob 99% of all D60s are 30 spline. Feeling lucky?

Actually, only 96.3% :shaking:

BTW, I just bought a lottery ticket, how'd you know? :flipoff2:

Actully 85% is probably more correct.

Lots were 10 or 16-spline... 30-spline is the "late model" stuff.
