Yes i did a search and did not find the info i need. i have swapped in a 5.0 sefi into my 82 CJ and now im working out the little details..... i used the ford fuel tank pump and fuel gauge sending unit. just shortened it and installed it in the jeep tank. what can i do to make a fuel gauge work. just hooking up the wire did not work. can i take the gauge from the dash of the donor 86 bronco? if so do i need to get other stuff to go along with it?
i still have the donor in my possesion. most swaps i have read about were into newer wranglers and they had fuel pumps in the tank already so this was not an issue with them. any help would be greatly appreciated as electrical is not my strong point.

You have to have two wires to the sending unit the one to the gauge and one to the frame so it is grounded. Another thing to consider is the Ford sending units work backwards from what some others do so it may read empty when it is full and read full when empty.
i have that, there are actually three wires, 1 ground, 2 power to the pump, and the 3 sending unit. when hooked up nothing registers at all.
i know the gauge works, recently new. i know the wire is complete and has continuity. i read about the jeep gauges and they work differently from other gauges also. thats why i am thinking about tring to use the ford gauge. even if i have to mount it somewhere else. i just dont want to go out in the snow and pull it from the dash if it wont work either.

Just because it is new doesn't mean it works.. Try your old sender and see if the gage works then. Also make sure your ground wire is making good contact at both ends
i have already verified both many times...... could it just be a different resistance sender, needing a matching resistance reading gauge?

Hip, is the tank already in the truck? IIRC, the Ford gauges are supposed to be a dead short at full, and 83 ohm empty... *I think*. But if you could get a meter across it and work the float back and forth, that would tell you for sure.
You can get Autometer gauges for like $40 that will match the Ford sending unit. It might look better in the dash than a hacked-up Ford one.... if you care about such things. :D
thank you for the info. the tank is in but not that hard to pull out and verify the readings. i will get this issue worked out if it kills me. i hate to run out of gas, and its so avoidable.
