Anyone have any idea? I need to get some oil for it, but if I get the stealer 90w, I don't want to get any extra quarts. My truck is home, so I can look in the manual later, if need be.

TIA,
Bryan

Bryan,

Is it a 4x4? I think 4x4 takes more gear oil based on my TDR search.

I did a search on TDR.. It looks like about 5 quarts (4x4)is what you need. You don't have to use the stealer's gear oil. You can run some GL5 rated oil. I'd go with something like Mobil 1 gear oil. Personally, I use Amsoil Series2000 75-140 gear oil. Don't need to add any friction modifiers with Amsoil gear oil.

It is the 4x4, but that should be the same axle.

The stealer is $15/qt, but I'm having a hard time finding 90w anywhere else! I called National Auto and they can't get it for me. It's got squeaky rear bearings, and I occaisionally get a gear oil smell, so I see warranty work in my future with this rear axle.

Thanks, I have another store to try!

Nope not the same, 2x4 D80 rear holds less than a 4x4 D80 rear

I haven't had the rear wheels off, but can these bearings be greased in the rear? My owner's manual says to pack the bearings every time you service the brakes.

Thoughts?

I packed them with synthetic grease when i first assembled it, since then all i do is just fill the diff up enough that the oil comes out the tubes then add a little more. No problems... blown seals or bearings on last two trucks 200k and 300k miles when i sold them still with the same wheel bearings.

I think the only thing different is the diff cover fill plug being higher on the 4x4. I would not spend 15.00 per quart from the stealer. I bought 5 gallons of Amsoil Series 2000 75-140W gear oil for like $150.00.

I'm going to pop off the wheel this weekend. Hopefully I can repack the bearings without taking a seal off, but I would have thought they were in the oil bath.

I'll probably go with an 80-90w from the local stoe. It looks like the LSD degrades the oil as it wears.
