Hey, A group of us from Texas are planning a trip to moab in or around MAY. None of us have ever been. Weve just read and heard about it. I would like some help from some who have been to let us know where a good place to stay or items to take. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Jerry:usa:

The weekend of May 16th - 19th will be the 5th annual Moab 'Zu Zoo which will be 100 or so Isuzu's running all over the place for a four day event. The weekend after will be the Explorer crowd. I'm not sure on TLCA yet.

There is camping all around and in town, motels everywhere ($60+ a night) and freebie camping anywhere out on the trails or places off the road like Kane Creek.

Hang out at the parking lot for City Market (it's the ONLY place to buy groceries in Moab) in the morning and you should be able to hook up with just about any type of trail you want by tagging along. Just ask around. Everyone is very friendly and most don't mind a few extra vehicles on the trail. I would'nt recommend just blasting out into the desert without some knowledge of the place. In May the temps can reach the 90's and drop to below freezing in short order.

Charles Wells book on Moab is considered to be a off road bible, I'd strongly recommend you get at least one. There is also topo maps, Moab East and Moab West available at most places in town or online at 4x4books or 4x4now.com.

Bring extra water containers. You will need it.

Some trails such as Kane Creek are rated midway in the trail ratings but recent erosion has made the hill climb out of the canyon a little more interesting, which is why I recommend finding someone with recent Moab trail experiance.

Thanks for the reply.
Just was wondering if there was a certain hotel that most offroader stayed at. Like maybe the Offroad Inn with lifts in back for repairs and a InHouse parts Store.LOL
I guess we need to find a schedule of events to avoid a busy weekend.
Thanks again:usa:

The Big Horn and the Red Stone are my favorites the Big Horn has better parking the Red Stone is more quiet. These are also usually the best deals.

Moab Valley Inn is very nice if you want suites.

All three are near City Market and Mickey D's.

I've heard the Tomahawk B&B has awesome breakfasts that keep you going most of the day.

SlickRock Campground is most accomodating to Off Roaders, Portal is next (and next door) and the rest just tolerate the Off Highway crowd.

Fat Tuesday err Fat something is awesome. Bucks is good too!

Bring your own alchohol unless you like expensive designer beer.
