: what springs to use with 1/2 axles on my s10 blazer
fugoffclothingco 09-02-2004, 04:44 PM i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me on what kind of leaf springs and what size to run on my 91 4 door s10 blazer, i'm puttin 1/2 ton axles on, i plan on using 38" super swamper tsl/sx's and bilstien 7100 res shocks, i have revolver shackles and the shackle flip kit for the rear that i also want to use. i also want to use hydro assist steering, i dont know that will be effected by certain springs or not, sorry if these questions are stupid, i'm pretty new to all of this haha
Jamus2 09-02-2004, 05:21 PM A combo of s-10 rear springs sprung over should give enough lift for 38's. Though to match that you'll need something additional in the rear. Blocks or whatever. Blocks suck, but we've all used em at one point or another.
bansheeman1 09-02-2004, 08:40 PM don't bother with 1/2 ton's thay will not hold up to 38's

Yup. While an S10 is lighter then a full size. That is still alot to ask 1/2 ton axles to hold up too unless you plan to beef them up a bit and are not a super heavy foot on the gas. Even still, you'll probably be going through ujoints and axle shafts on a regular basis.
blacksheep10 09-04-2004, 08:55 AM your front spring selection may be limited by the space that your frame allows for your axle to still be centered in the wheelwell. A lot of people put 52" rears in the front of a fullsize, but I am not sure if there is enough frame hanging out the front to allow that on an s truck. factory chevy fronts are easy to come by and are 46 or 47" and will fit the front of an s-10, but are made for heavier trucks and won't give you much flex. go to your truck and measure from the current wheelwell center point on the frame forward to the end of the usable frame for mounting perches and see if it is over 26" by enough to feel safe mounting perches up there. If so, get some factory 52" rears out of a 73-87 half/3/4t 4x4 and remove some leaves, build perches to suit.
I agree, half ton axles won't like you throwing 38's at them, but I have a friend that ran a 12 bolt rear with plenty of horsepower in a 3600# s-10 for years without much bad luck. (now he has a hp 60 and 14 bolt, go figure.)
That being said, the front will shell axles about every other trip out if you don't have big gears and a lot of power/reduction. Pdaddy proved this with his 4.3 sfa s-10 on hummer tires. the fronts just won't hold up until you get a 60 or piss up a rope and buy all chromo shit for your half/3/4t front.
fugoffclothingco 09-06-2004, 09:58 AM i bought the rears from my buddy, he put chromoly axle shafts in, they have 5:13's, detroit locker in the rear, arb air locker in the front, ha had them on a 72 chevy stepside, heres pics of them www.cardomain.com/id/fugoffclothingco i figured if he ran them on that truck they should hold up on an s-10, but again, i am new to this stuff
Tim84K10 09-06-2004, 12:49 PM Just put 35s on it and be done with it.
fugoffclothingco 09-06-2004, 07:14 PM Nah, Im going with 38's if not bigger - 38 is the smallest Im gonna go.
Jamus2 09-07-2004, 06:51 AM The 4door Blazer is decievingly heavy, but with chromoly shafts, you're about the strength of a 60, atleast the shafts are. I'd say 38's would be fine. Plus, you don't have a V8 in it right? And with the ARB you can save some stress on the front atleast part of the time.
bansheeman1 09-07-2004, 03:03 PM What do chromoly shafts cost?
can you buy a stronger ring and pinion?
why are you so against to a 60
do it up wright and put a 2 1/2 ton under it :D
fugoffclothingco 09-07-2004, 03:20 PM i'm not against a 60 at all, it just this is what i have to work with and i'd rather use then let it go to waste, i'll ty it with my rears that i have no and if it doesnt hold up, well i learned a lesson ahahaha, like i said i'm pretty new to this so i will learn from my mistakes but you cant learn unless you try new things
fugoffclothingco 09-07-2004, 03:22 PM oh yeah, and i don't have a v8, i'm runnin a 4.3 vortec
bansheeman1 09-07-2004, 03:34 PM me to
