Ok guys, I'm not sure if this would fit here or in the newbie forum. If I posted wrong I apologize.

I just purchased a 78 CJ5 with a 304 for dirt cheap in hopes of fixing it up and beating on it instead of my TJ. Unfortuantely, I have little experience with CJs or the 304 engine. To start off, I made a 'first glance list' of what I saw wrong with the engine today after work and took some pics.

As I see it, here is what I need to start with:
1)Mount the alternator
2)Mount or fix the fan
3)Run Belt
4)Throttle Return spring needs to be replaced
5)Fluids

Now I know I'm missing some stuff so I took pics to see what else I need. Hopefully you guys can help me just run down the list and work through these first fixes.

Here are the pics and questions:
1) What is this?

2)Looking down on the engine you can see where the fan should go, my question is should that this little wheel is missing 2 posts, where can I get them and also how much resistance to spinning should this have? It doesn't have resist much at all now. Also, what is the pulley looking thing below the water pump for? Should I be able to turn it easily by hand because I can't.

3) The alternator is just chilling down in this hole right now, from the looks of these pictures how is this supposed to be mounted? Am I missing a bracket?

4) Obviously I need a new throttle return spring, how does it attach?

5) See the bolt sticking up (sorry for the focus), what is it for, should it be tightened down?

6) Here is the fan and what looks to be the pulley that goes with it. What is this gear looking thing? Also how does the fan mount and am I missing pieces?

7) Not a question, but I did find the other wire that runs to this as you can see in this picture :)

8) See the two holes - should a hose of some sort run between these?

Thanks for your help so far everyone, I'm trying to run through everything I see wrong and am hoping that you guys will bear with me and run through it as well.

Thanks again,
Jerrod

First of all, I think you'd be alot better served by getting yourself a Chiltons AND and Haynes' manual to get a good idea of the layout and working of your motor, rather than hoping for scattered input from the folks here. Also try JeepsUnlimited.com, since they cater more to simpler Jeep question.

As to answer some of what you've asked:

pic#1: that's the cover for your oil filler, and crankcase breather.
pic#2: The studs for your water pump pulley should be available from any decent automotive or hardware store; the bottom pulley is the crankshaft, and won't be easy to turn by hand unless all the plugs are pulled and the transmission is in neutral. Since you have it at this point, test your water pump pulley for any resistance, as it may need replacing.
pic#3-7: Your alternator will bolt into one of those tapped holes in the front of the head. The lower banana-shaped bracket is then used for tensioning. You can elect to space the alternator off the top mounting bolt more properly with a piece of pipe spacer cut to size, but it's not 100% necessary.
pic#9: That bolt doesn't do much... if you had an A/C compressor, part of the bracketry would attach there.
pic#10: That's a timing gear. Kind of important that it was replaced if it isn't in the vehicle. As to how the fan attaches, the pulley goes on first (grooves align with the crankshaft pulley) and then the fan, and then the aforementioned studs get bolts and so forth.
pic#12: Water hose goes from the thermostat cover (top) to the water pump (bottom).

Good luck, and look up the TeamRush or TFI ignition upgrade.

That fan looks like a chevy fan to me. Not sure if there'd be problems using it, but you might be better off with a flex fan and spacer.

Does the extra pulley have two or three grooves? If it has three then it's an AC pulley, two would be non-AC. (Like what is on the engine.)

When you do your belts, make sure they line up well. I'm suspcious that the alternator is the later GM version, but the bracket looks like a bracket for the earlier Ford alts that AMC used. And the pulley on the alternator looks pretty abused. Might just need to space it one way or the other, or risk throwing a belt when you put load on the alt. Watch that the pulley doesn't chew on your belt.

Go to the local junk yard and look at any grand cherroke thats going to be your best reference. I would start with getting a different alternator bracket and going from there..

Alright, thanks guys. I'll pick up a couple manuals and get to work. Thanks for helping me get started.

did I miss the memo stating newbie questions were ok in Jeep Tech again?

"I can't turn that bottom pulley, should I be able to?" Seriously, if you don't know what function the crankshaft pulley serves then you don't need to be attempting to do this.

Yep! Fan Man!

OK, take this to Newbie. BTW, your water pump is pink.

Throttle spring attaches to the lowest hole on the throttle bellcrank (in the picture) and the other end goes to any solid spot up top that pulls the throttle closed and allows full movement of the throttle.
The alternator spacer looks like it's laying in there below the alternator...it's the steel tube.
From the looks of things (extra timing gear laying around, new freeze plug in head, replaced water pump), I would run a quick compression test before I spent any more time on that engine. I bet it's been recently overheated and the front end has been redone. Don't put alot of time in an engine that needs to be pulled and rebuilt.
