howdy all....
i need to start thinking about a next set of tires....35s are beginning to looks lost in the wheel wells...
and ssrs are getting worn....id like to hear from those of you who run swamper sxs on a daily driver....to me, 38x14.5 is an ideal size, and obviously sxs are tits on the trail, but id like to know if theyd be even remotely tolerable onroad....i understand they wont be perfect, but would they be ok? ive ridden in trucks with bias tires, and honestly, it felt pretty shitty on road...but ive been told the sxs have both radial and bias belts...is that true?
i drive 30-50 miles per day.
let me know what you all think.

I run 35x15.5 SX's on my Scout II, I drive it almost every day and its fine. The tires actually handle better than I thought they would. They suprisingly werent as loud as I thought they would be either. Not that they are quiet, but tolerable if you turn up your radio:D As far as I know the SX's are only available in bias ply. They make SSR's in 37 in. tooif you dont want SX's. Personally I love the SX's they are very tough, when these go bald i will definately get another set of em. HTH,

I HAVE A SET ON MY CRUZAH...38.5X14.5....

WHEN I FIRST GOT THEM THEY SUCKED BUT I GUESS THEY BROKE IN OR SOMETHING ....CAUSE NOW THEY ARE PEFECTLY STREETABLE......

SOMETIMES FLATSPOTTED IN THE MORN..BUT THATS IT....I THINK THEY ARE BALANCED.....WELL THEY WERE PUT ON A BALANCER AND WEIGHTS ADDED......BUT THAT DOESNT SAY MUCH WITH A 100+ LBS OF ROTATING MASS ON EACH CORNER.......

IF YOU WHEEL EVERY OTHER WEEKEND OR SO I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THEM......JUST TO LOOK COOL NO WAY THEY SUCK.....

SXs are bias belted, meaning they have the 4 ply bias carcass and two radial belts underneath the tread. they're sposed to be tough as nails.

at the risk of sounding JUish....whats the fastest speed they are safe up to?
they definitely arent just for looks...i really like my ssrs in all areas except for sidewall stregnth worries me, and if i can get away with sxs on street, im a happy camper.
and the flat spotting isnt that bad?
i was gonna get pj dirt grips, but i think the sxs would perform better in east coast type conditions.
also, will grooving the tires cause chunking?

I love my 35 X 15.5 SXs, but for a daily driver, NO WAY. These things balance horribly (read: not at all), are NOT round, flat spot a lot in the morning. The rig drives fine, don't get me wrong, as far as steering, etc etc - if anything it is the most stable it has every been due to the sheer momentum of the mass on each wheel not wanting to be diverted. However, it vibrates like HELL. Each initial ride is like going down a washboard road. It is actually much better once you've wheeled the thing and the sidewalls get flexed - it's always way better on the way home.

Not to rain on your parade, but SXs are notoriously bad daily driver tires, plus they are gonna wear FAST. This is my experience. I don't daily drive mine, but if I did, I would HAVE to use other tires. In fact I'm getting a second set of rims so I can mount a set of ATs for the winter, the only time of the year when I might have to DD it if the weather conditions get real bad.

My own personal opinion is that anyone using swampers for a DD must be nuts, simply because of how fast they are gonna wear. Who wants to waste all that beautiful tire on PAVEMENT??!!??

Now off road, they rule, which is why I love them.

I think it depends on how round the tires are. I have seeen
some SX's ride smooth, but it seems to me that most don't .
I run 36" SX's and I drove with them on my dd for about
8 months They are rough if you cant get them ballanced good.
On mine they double stacked the weights on about 1/4 of the wheel, it still is not enough.
But I do like them overall.

Regarding the dirt grips:

Those tires do kinda look good, don't they? I've heard that they are BIG for their size (ie: that the 38 inch DG is bigger than the 38.5 SX), and that they balance real nice. That makes them attractive because it is hard to find a bigger than 35 inch RADIAL that is more than 12.5 inches wide. However, the testimonials I have heard so far haven't got me convinced that they are gonna be equal to an SX off road, which is where it counts. They do not look to be as tough, and they do not appear to have as much sidewall traction - but this is just from looking at the pictures. So basically I am waiting to hear more about them from people who's opinion I know and trust......... they are also expensive.

It's like the MTR - word was out that they were so great - and they are, in the rocks. But they are no improvement over a BFG in the mud, and I can personally attest to the fact that their sidewalls are NOT as strong as SX sidewalls (buddy tore one)...... so I think on new tires like that you gotta wait it out a bit until ALL the results come in ........

unless YOU want to be the guinea pig ? ....... :) :)

IMHO go with the 38" TSL Radial

off road identical to the SX
on road identical to the SSR

If you have the money to burn then get the SX's. Mine leave tracks in my driveway just pulling in and out, so they are really soft, but I love them.

I agree with Chad Totally! I love my tires but man they are scary on the road. I have been thinking about having them balanced but I don't think it will be worth it. I drove my Bronco to work last friday and it was interesting. When I got up above 60 things were crazy they vibrate really bad. Would I buy another tire? NO. I would get a ssr or TSL radial. Good Luck. Jake

I love them so far. I have about 2500 miles on mine and just started to notice a slight amount of ware. And there quite as hell!

has anyone heard of a larger than 37x12 ssr coming out?
i would ideally like something about 37.5-38, and ~13.5in wide...but thats just wishful thinking...hard finding a ~38 in tire thats streetable....maybe ill have to go back and look at the PJs again....they will have a 37x12pj out soon, and since they run big, maybe that will be where its at.
anyways...thanks fellas.

John have you thought about Ground hawgs? They make a 38x15.5x15 that is a radial. I have also heard that they wear very good on the road. And if you do need more traction off-road you could always get the groover out and fix that too.

Just a thought to consider, I am seriously leaning that way when i get tires this spring.

38's do ride rough and do wear quick. The PJ's are a very nice tire to ride on the street VERY WELL. I think they are even guaranteed to balance with less than 6 oz. of weight!! They do ok in the mud but do take a "blip" of the throttle to clean out. I woildn't hesitate a min. to get a set of the PJ's as DD tires. The GROUND HOG does wear VERY WELL on the street.....I had a set of 44's that lasted for EVER (3yrs). My true tire for me is the 35 BOGGER and as a DD tire/off road I tend to get about 25K on a set before I buy another set......decisions, decisions .........:D

I have a set of 38.5x14.50 SXs on my 95 Bronco.... they are about 1/2 gone and all of 10,000 miles old if that. I drove a lot of mud when I lived in Virginia, and they aren't too bad on the street... If I were to do new tires on my Bronco for the amount of time I put it on the street, I would go to the 39" Hawgs or Gumbo Mudders, or the 38.5" Baja Claws... the Baja Claws are quite a bit larger (wider and taller) than the SXs (and much heavier).

thats kinda weird considering my ssrs are just as nice on road as the bfgs, but they nut all over a bfg offroad.
i can accepts boggers and other bias swampers as being crappy on road, but i know plenty ppl who run swamper radials without hitch.

i have 36 sx's on my daily.....

they are MUCH better .... ON ROAD...(and of course OFF) .... than the previous tires i had. ....... 35x 12.50 Radial Baja Claws :barf: ...louder and all over the road.

so it's not always a given that radials are better.

I had 38" Radial TSLs before my 38.5" SXs and I like the SXs much better on the road... however, they do seem to be softer than the radial TSLs. The Baja Claws will be loud as hell on the street (as will be Ground Hawgs)... so if you want something to last on the street and not be too loud, look into Gumbo Mudders (and they are somewhat comparable to BFG MTs in the mud... but I doubt they would do that good on rock..)

coupla points...
gumbo mudders are going to cut it for me...im about 90% rocks.
im not nearly as concerned with wear as i am with simple safety...if sxs will make the xj a huge chore to drive (and i dont mind noise either, just unsafe highway handling) i should probably get something else and get a set of sxs for offroad only..id prefer not to have to buy two sets of tires though...
at this point it looks like 37in ssrs, which im not entirely thrilled about, but i really cant make any complaints about my 35in ssrs.
