Im in the process of customizing my 1990 YJ's dash and was wondering what the big computer looking module behind a YJ's glove compartment is for? Im assuming its for the carburetor? is it? I have an MPI kit on there so can i take this out?

Well i doubt this will help, but my TJ doesn't have this box you're talking about, so maybe it is just for the carb? The only thing behind a TJ glove box is some fuses and wire looms.

The carbed 258's in YJ's came with a computer so it could be that, I'd bet money on it.....The computer in the TJ's is mounted on the floor in front of the console.
What are you doing to your dash rockbuggy, flat cj look?

The box that you suspect is the carburetor computer, is. Whether you can remove it, or if there are other circuits running through there that you need, is a question I'm sorry I can't answer.

Thanks guys. no real help :D I was going to unplug it and see what happens but I cant start my Jeep right now. I ripped out the gas tank last weekend, getting ready to install my aluminum fuel cell in the tub. I'll just have to hold off on the dash mods untill the cell is in, then I can test it. :D

WRONG... the PCM is located on the firewall just above the battery... go look.. the module your talking about under the dash in front of the consule is a Air bag module

Chances are its the PCM for the yj.. there should be a few large plug in's with a SHIT load of wires.. if so.. yeah its the computer

Do I need to keep this thing, or can I take it out? I've installed a Mopar MPI kit so no more carb, im assuming this helps run the carburetor?. Or does this "PCM" serve some other significant purpose? Basically i wanna know if I can take it out or not? Thanks for any info :D

YJs had airbags in 90???

The computer was located in at least two different spots. When I had my 1990 4 banger, it was behind the dash by the glovebox.

When I installed my 1991 6 cyl, the computer is mounted to the firewall in the engine compartment on the driver's side.

1990's do not have airbags.

Al J is right; you may have other circuits running through it even though you went with the MPI kit. If you can't unplug it now, check out a Hayne's manual and see what circuits run through it. If it's everything you replaced, ditch it. Worse off, call the guys who sold you the kit and ask them if the MPI kit bypasses the computer.

BTW, love to see pix when you are finished. I want to gut my interior as well and replace the old, unreliable gauges. I found that my oil pressure gauge is a good measure of how fast the wind is blowing!

he's talking about the TJ's. Thats a decelleration (sp?) module on the TJ's in front of the shifter, silver. You can see it if you run a Tuffy console.

Exactly. This guy is talking about a 90 JY.

yea that's the carb 'puter.....throw it as far as you can.....if you use the extra wires to sling it you'll get more distance!!!! ;)
