I'm eating breakfast with my girlfriend this morning and the phone rings...its my long time buddy Jesse calling with a question.
"Hey Josh, how many postal Jeeps do you own?"
"Uhh, gee Jesse, none. Why?"
"Because I just got one for $500! I'm driving down the freeway and this thing is scarier than all hell! Hey, do you have any C25 at your place, cuz I'll be there in 20 minutes."
Well, buddy shows up and promptly splashes oil all over the driveway, the little DJ looks like it is going to flop on its side when he rounds the cul de sac. Here are the specs: 1976 DJ5, stock I6 (needs a rebuild, rod knocking) with a TF727 tranny that is in great shape, D44 rear axle and almost no rust. The body is in great shape, as is the frame. All in all this should prove to be a good foundation. He has a 350 just sitting around that we are contemplating throwing in there, but that is pretty unlikely.
The project is going to start by rebuilding that little 6 cylinder. Shouldn't be too hard, and we have connections. His dad is a big muscle car guy and the neighbor used to design fuel injection for Chevy. Another friend of mine and I are going to hit the boneyards looking for a transfer case that will work. We are thinking D20, but a D300 would be ideal. Axles are looking like they will be full width waggys. That thing is just so tippy going around a corner that I'm willing to bet it would be on its side in no time on the trail. We will figure something out for the flares to keep it legal. Major trimming is needed in the rear. You can barely get your finger in between the body and the stock 215s. Not a big deal though. The puny little springs are probably going to be ditched in favor of the waggys, moved outboard and forward to stretch the wheelbase. The letter tray in the passenger side (driver's side on a normal rig) is going to be removed in favor of a new bucket. We are thinking of just chopping the top off and putting in a full cage, but that may need to wait. Anyway, just thought you folks might like to see the before shots.
