I just got done doing a 2.5" exhaust on my 79 fj40 with 2F, what I used for a muffler was a 80 series flowmaster crossflow muffler with dual outlets designed for a camaro, it lets me run dual tailpipes and it sounds pretty badass. If you dont want to do duals I would recommend a 40 series flowmaster, the flowmasters are good for offroading because they have the baffles inside that make them pretty crush resistant, plus they sound cool, just my $.02

Magna Flow is a decent, cheaper alternative.

I got a Flowmaster with 3" pipe on my wagon with 2F -- sounds great but I'm thinking lack of back pressure may be causing stalling on the trail.

What is the stock pipe on a FJ60 -- 2.25"?? Any thoughts on the back pressure issue...

I bought this muffler from summit and like it alot so far. Cant beat the price either. Go to www.summitracing.com and put SUM-630125 in the part# search.

I have a flowmaster on my 62. It is a 50 series. Good flow but a bit less sound. Loud mufflers get old quick; especially for you friends.

40 or 50 series flowmaster and 2.5" exhaust..

Perfect..

If you like to piss others off.. go with the 2 chamber. If you like the low growl, go with
a 3 chamber. 40 Series flows are 2, 50s are 3.

What is the stock in/out exhaust dia. on a 2F 60?

I just posted to this question for another 60 owner a few weeks ago. Though expensive, Spin Tech Mufflers.com (http://www.spintechmufflers.com) have what i think are the best mufflers on the marked for 4 wheelers.

1. They make them out of fully welded 3/16 alum steel or SS, so they're very crush resistent in comparison to sheetmetal mufflers.

2. They use Spin Traps that create an exhaust gas vortex that throws much of the the vibration/noise centrifigally outward within the muffler, vice out the tail pipe. They have quiet models that make a nice, muscular (not obtrusively load) sound at heavy acceleration.

3. The Spin Traps prevent high rpm resonance like some Flows and other baffle mufflers.

4. The Spin Traps create a venturi effect (like a controlled tornado) that scavanges the exhaust gases. Read "sucks the gases out the tail pipe to increase flow without needing large diameter pipe and muffler width". Spin Techs don't fight the gases with baffles or packing, they redirect them like Judo moves that use a person's (exhaust's) momentum against them.

Read the write-up that you can click on from their first page. They are so advanced and available in a variety of pipes sizes and many combinations of single and dual inlets and outlets.

Fairly costly, but not outrageous. I have aboslutely no affiliation. This is sounding like broken record, since I'm not affiliated with any company or anyone who sells something. I've noticed most wheelers and Cuisers owners are looking for the cheapest parts and methods for obvious reasons (family comittments for one). One of the few things I can contribute to the PBB ,and especially the Cruiser Forum, is what is the best high end product out there, regardless of price. Sorry if that works cross purposes most times.;) I wish, I too, could afford everything I might recommend.:(

I think Spin Tech does retail sales, too. Don't quote me.

Hope I've been of help, again :shaking:

I use a 40 series flowmaster on mine. I've got a 2 1/4 system behind a downey header. It sounds pretty beefy at low rpms for a six. Get it above 2500 and it's damn loud. But I like that. When the tbi V8 goes in sometime in the hopefully near future I'm going to run flowmasters again.

I looked under the "street" mufflers & saw one's for truck/SUV/cruiser etc.
Which one would you recommend?
I did notice the cruiser one has 2 1/4" exhaust.

Go thru Spin Tech's product button, click on "street perf" (vice "racing"), and you'll reach their desciption of each street muffler "series" they sell. The pages for each muffler series give the muffler dimensions and the inlet/outlet size and single/dbl combos. With that info, you can match your pipe sizes , inlet/outlet location and # (single/dbl), and under carriage space perfectly. All of Spin Tech's quieter mufflers flow well for anything not used in racing or for street drags where every oz of hp counts. Spin Tech's best flowing street perf and all their racing perf mufflers cover such high-flow needs. I expect they provide all the info you need, since they address sizes, configurations, quietness/loudness, etc., but I'll add my 2 cents anyway. :shaking:

Expect for 4-cyl and maybe sixes, I would pick the longest muffler that would fit perfectly for my pipe size coming off the manifold/headers without causing sharp pipe bends, awkward angles, hot floorboards, or non-stock/difficult-to-fab hanging positions (vice using a smaller, better-fitting muffler). [Captain Obvious, here, to you experts:D]

That leaves only specific size and sound considerations for most 4 wheelers [like even those with high perf 2Fs ].

Hunting and high-end stereo listening warrant the quieter series, but some such users would even be happy with the bit louder, bit better flowing series. For single-exhaust full sizes, or dual-exhausts with the muffler length space, I think the RV and Sport Truck SUV series would be great for quiet highway driving with the stereo on, but I don't have any high hp motors in my motley collection (and I haven't installed Spin Techs on the trucks I'm working to sell). I don't care if I've lose 10 hp over other high perf muffs for the quiet I gain (prolly lost nuthin' much). With these long suckers, you can even enjoy acoustic/classical music at highway speeds with decent sound deadening material under the mats/carpet (assuming a quiet top).

The Sportsman/Street XLs are 16" long, nearly as quiet as the 20" RVs and 22" Truck SUVs, and, @ 16" long, they're a good compromise between quiet and fit. Good for FJ6xs? Or any dual exhaust where they'll fit?

The "Street Series" are only 13". Still pretty quiet. Good for dual exhaust FJ40s? Single exhaust, cat-equipped FJ40s?

The 2-1/4" thick "Cruiser Series" should solve thickness concerns where the 16" length works fine. Maybe the best for FJ40s & SWBs that can handle the length since they make distancing from the floorboards easier while still staying above the frame bottom. Fairly quiet, but not the quietest (Doh!). No compromise here, really: good flow, quiet, clearance. And no, they're not made just for Land Cruisers. Call yourself a lowrider.

I really enjoy my FJ40 with the top off and the windshield down. Put the windshield down on most any petrol rig with a quiet muffler/exhaust system with cast manifolds and you can barely hear the engine running (good valve adjustment lately?:D). With my 2F, I hear gear whine only and have great, nearly unobstructed (cage) views in the back country. Now, that's livin'! People comment on how quiet my rig is when I have it well away from others making more exhaust noise. You've never known what your missing 4 wheeling the desert or backwoods if you don't yet have a quiet exhaust. For instance, quiet doesn't bounce off Loon's Granite Bowl. I come up close on deer and elk out of season (no poaching jokes, please:laughing: ). Lotsa mufflers can do this, but with good flow, too?

Finally, a pet peeve. I think 4 wheelers get flack from enviros as much because enviros can hear engines a mile away as for any damage wheelers cause. Loud 4WDs, motor bikes, atvs, disturb their "wilderness experience" and ease their willingness to blame off roaders for every outdoor ill. For the sake of our motorized pastime, no 4WD driven in pristine back country should have a loud exhaust, especially near wilderness areas (think Dusy). As long as I'm installing a muffler/exhaust anyway, I'm willing to install quiet muffs, both for myself, and to not be so easily noticed by those who hate 4 wheelers. If, on occasion, enviros don't notice me because they can't hear or see me (when nearby, we're not always within their sight, are we?), then they'll never complain about me by name or liscense number.:D And Spin Tech Cruiser, RV, Sportsman/Street XL, Sportsman Truck SUV Series provide quiet with good flow–best of both worlds.:smokin:

I don't know if most of this applies to diesel owners. Ask Spin Tech reps.

HTH, but, again, take my opinions with a grain of salt.;) Obviously, I favor quiet. Your common sense combined with Spin Tech's website should rule your choice.

IMHO.....I am a cheap bastard and I use turbo mufflers since they are cheap. I know you may squeeze more performance out of a better muffler, but will it really make a difference on a 2F? I hate loud mufflers too........It gets old real fast on the trail, hour after hour after hour......

Yeah, if my 2f had a bit more go when I put my foot down I wouldn't even consider putting the v8 in. I love the way it sounds. Heck I might put a cam in it ,freshen the bottom end, put in new valve seals, and call it a day. Would be nice to keep the drivetrain all toyota.

Hard to beat Flowmaster performance for the $$$$.
I've got Dynamax Super Turbos because they are super cheap.
Good sound. Good performance.
