I have a 97 CTD, 70,000 miles, runs great, I have let the CTD idle for a few minutes (5 to 15) and when I start it up again later, it looks like its burning oil once the EGTs get up to temp then goes away.

My CTD dosen't loose any oil or burn it going down the road......It only smokes for little while just after an idle.

Is there an oil seal that might be bad in the turbo? Any information will help.

I also noticed my EGTs seem higher than I think are normal, towing about 6000lbs, it ranges from 800 to 950 with the probe post turbo...they were a bit higher before I put on a straight pipe exhaust.....again any info will help.

950 is right in the danger zone for post turbo... TTT for ya, but I wouldn't hang out at 950* too long..

1100 post turbo is bad 1400 preturbo is bad, 950 is telling me he doesnt have enough fuel

The smoke is from letting it idle, some call it wet stacking others have other names for it. Its not oil smoke.

so the billowing blue smoke after an extended idle time once the EGTs get up to temp is nothing to worry about? dosen't sound right to me...

I always get a small blast of black smoke when I start it up, wheather it's the first time I start it, or the last time. Guess it's normal.

Your truck is telling you not to let it idle for so long!!! These engines do not produce enough heat at idle to burn all the fuel injected, so it starts to "wash" the clyinders and you get fuel just sticking in there. You should NOT let it idle for so long, unless the RPM is bumped up to about 1250 or so, keep egts around 300 when letting it idle for so long. You really should move your probe to pre turbo, drill the manifold a couple inches in front of the flange off centered (there is a rib running down the middle). Post turbo readings are a good ballpark but they are not nearly as accurate as pre turbo. about 1250* pre turbo is the limit for sustained, its all right to hit higher for short spurts and do no damage. You are definitely running really warm if you have a stock motor.
