: Strength of Dana 44 5.89 Gears?

I was wondering if anyone had a "feel" for the strength of 5.89 D44 gears.

Do they have a real reputation for being weaker than say 5.12s or 4.56s in practice? They are weaker by design but has anyone actually noticed them being weaker in the field?

In case it makes a difference, target truck is 4 door Sidekick with 35" tires and TracKick t-case (4.2:1). Probably weigh around 3500 lbs in "fighting trim". Moderate off-roading, not a lot of extreme rock-crawling or anything like that. Probably be mid door in the water more often than trying to crawl a rock ledge.

I really need the 5.89s to make highway RPMs bearable...

TIA!

Should be fine. They've been thrashed under a bunch of toyotas that are at 228:1 and running 38s in the rocks - so they seem to hold up under toyotas pretty well.

I'm not sure if Camo had a D44 up front at any point, but if he did he's broken the ring and pinon in it. But then, camo has broken every component in a Toyota drivetrain except for the crankshaft and the mainshaft in the tranny, that I know of.

I think this probably answers your own question. :)

I would say the same thing Chris. Your not going to damage those gears unless you get away from Ontario. Rocks arn't big enough. I run 5.38's and have been doing the Best of the East.

Go For It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give me a call when your in build mode.:D

Shall do! See the Solid Axle Sidekick thread? I'm all jazzed again.

Hey, did you make or buy your frame mounts for the radius arms? Just curious.

Don't be doing any crazy endos at the tough truck Friday night - save it for when we are there on Saturday! :)
