: Another Cruiser on Portals

Well guys, its done....sort of. I got my cruiser driving last night about midnight after installing Volvo portals under it. Really not too hard of a project, in retrospect. Still a few bugs left.....won't stop to speak of, I'm gonna change to a drum brake master instead of my disk and see if that helps. Front vacuum locker keeps popping just like my old lockrite did...sounded like I broke an axle as I was pulling out of the shop. I've still got to figure out wheels and tires. I don't have a lot of "finished" pics, but if someone will tell me where to go to figure out how to post pics, I will post what I have.

A drum master will work perfect for your needs, assuming you set up the brakes correctly. Are you using a vacuum resevoir with the factory switch panel?

Unless you're being really hard on it and they were in really beaten condition, I doubt you broke anything.

The brakes are set up right...I think I just need the drum master cylinder.

As far as the locker, goes, I am using my own vacuum pump and solenoids with no reservoir, but I don;t believe it needs a reservoir. Once the locking collar is engaged, it should hold itself by the action of the teeth. I hope I just need to adjust vac mechanism for full engagement.

As to the pics....it is really about time that I learn how to post them myself. I learned how to wash my underwear on my own without turning them pink, so I can learn how to post pics. Can someone send me instructions or find me a thread??

Nope. The teeth will disengage unless there is a constant vacuum pulling the collar over. If you haven't taken apart a vacuum actuator, it's got a rather large spring in it, and it takes quite a bit of vacuum to hold it. Put it on a vacuum guage and see what it reads (I think it was like 18" of mercury at 6000ft?) Try using a reservoir and see if that helps.

As for posting pictures, look under "additional options" when you're replying. It'll say "attach files," click on "manage attachments" and upload your pics. Rather painless.

Well, It does have a constant vacuum, probably at like 18-20hg, just no reservoir. It isn't actually just letting go, but when it is under very heavy load (turning on concrete while engaged in this case) it pops loose. I guess a reservoir could help, however, I think from looking at the design, that it should mostly stay engaged due to the load on the teeth. I will test on Monday.
BTW, the info on posting pics helped. Now I have to learn how to resize them b/c they were too big. PM me if you have help on that.

It should be capable of locking the axle (like an ARB) to where it will act like a spool on dry pavement.

As for pics, I use Lexmark Twain driver to resize pics. (came with my printer) Whatever program you use, just click image size, and make sure you maintain your aspect ratio.

Here you go. Shane, have someone show you on your computer how to resize the pics OR set you camera to shoot 640x480. Most have that option.

MORE PICS!!!

I understand even with the SUA you will need a traction bar on the rear...what have you got in mind?

What ratio are your Volvos? Whaer did you get them?

I think that is such a great mod for a Cruiser.

I would like to have a set with a stock Cruiser 4 speed...

BTW, you trying to be like your brother Kim with that upside down bezel?:flipoff2:

He has no excuse for the upside down bezel since he is running a wimpy 2F motor.. :flipoff2:

Well, the bezel is updide down because I didn't want the rust holes on the top.
The rear traction bar is already done...let's hope it works. I'm worried about having to make a front traction bar to go with it. These are the 5.99s.
Nolan...I guess I'll send you some more pictures. I can't figure out how to resize them.

http://www.trivista.com/products/asquareimage/

Dowload asquareimage, easy to use, set it at 440x440 when saving them, and save them to a different folder than the one you get them from, or rename them so you can tell the smaller ones.

edit, BTW it's free

Another free pic sizer if you are using XP is over at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and its called "Image Resizer" over on the right hand side.

Works great and not complicated at all!

I'd like to see that. Has it been done?

Killerpee

Nope, just one. goes from center of the axle above diff to crossmember at transfer case. It worked great with the stock axles, just ate springs about 1 a season. We'll see....I mounted this one higher to take some of the leverage away.

Tie rod and drag link...barely fit with the leafs, but both worked stock....just threaded a heim into the drag link.

Lastly....everyone always bashes vendors around here....I have had some great service and help from guys off Pirate...want to thanks them. Thank you to:
Ted (Peak ZJ)..great guy, great prices for Pirate guys.
Dean (66CJDean)..super fast turnaround on the cryo work, sent me a disposable razor that was cryoed which I've been using for about a month now, just like new.
Butch (Texican) thanks for the springs...lets wheel again soon.
Pro-tech Machine, McKinney...fast and nice work.
Ken (Go2Guy)..good advice, good work on the locker for the Volvos.

I won't bash the bad vendor I am having problems with.....yet

Get that thing out and hammer on it good befor Poteau, I am sceptical on the wrap device. Those things have a TON of leverage versus your old setup.

Tires? Whats the plan?

One of the biggest sets of 38's Swamper sells is the 38" TSL (not SX). Rock Taxi had some and they were noticably bigger than my SX's at the time.

Like I said, we'll have to see on the traction bar. If it works as is, I've got minimal time in it and it is nice and simple. As far as tires go, I think I am going with the 39 IROKs...I really just need to decide on wheels and get them ordered.
Jason....yeah I'm in Mckinney. Pm me and come awn by.

GreenPig

Theoretically, your traction bar will allow the rear axle to pivot on the axle mount. It does nothing to actually keep the axle from twisting.

In reality, I think it will work okay. I had pretty minimal axle wrap in my 55, but the springs were 7+1.

Would it make a difference if it were a shackle reversal front end, that way you are not pulling the spring and shackle backwards?

They don't sell them in the 16" wheel variety? So far I like my IROKs, but the tread depth on the 39's kinda blows. Price is right though.

Want that MC?

Well....I probably shouldn't have played hookie today just to go work on the Cruiser.....but, I got the locker concern fixed.....just needed some adjustment at the actuator. Cleaned all the shoes and the inside of the drums and its stopping pretty good...I may just need to find someplace that can machine the drums. Swapped the front springs side to side to try to fix the lean....still there. Anyway, basically done for now...just need to make shock hoops for the front and rear and mount new front bumpstops, maybe a new cage if there's time.

It's hard to tell from the picture but did you cut the rear axle housing so the differential is offset. What tcase are you using. I know the volvo rear portals are not perfectly centered. Need more pics!!!!!!

oh and nice work :smokin:

Killerpee
09-17-2004, 08:45 PM
No, the rear diff is offset stock...but there are at least 2 different versions, one is centered. Using stock 3 speed case. I may get some more pics this weekend. BTW...first trip out will be on a set of grooved and siped 35 inch Goodyear Super Studs (or whatever the hell they are). I'm gonna get a feel for my setup before I buy wheels and tires, so I'll also be working on the winch before October (just in case).
