Thanks for reading, and I feel like an idiot for asking this.

Whats the law on towbars? Are breakaway chains (or cables) needed for them?

Thanks in advance.

Way, Way back in about 1991 or so My wife and I were heading to Tellico and about 2:30 in the morning I had a blow-out on the left front tire (38"groundhawg) while towing my jeep on a towbar thru KN. We were going about 70 mph in a suburban, when that fawker popped it turned sideways on the rim and the whole rig (sub. and jeep) started spinning around. We did a 360 and a half before the jeep rolled and the towbar popped off the ball, luckly we had some chains on that biatch, they were kinda long (16' each , but I had taped the excess to the towbar with duct tape), and when that cj hit the end of those chains ...Camping gear, toolboxes, spare parts, you name it came fling right thru the back of that pos...
You shoulda seen the looks on peoples faces when the looked in the jeep and there was nobody in it ! It was so far from the suburban they thought we were traveling separatly...

Yes chains are a good idea...

Wow--what a trailer tale. Guess beadlocs may have been helpful here! Anyway, safety chains should always be used although when something goes wrong like was just described here--maybe it would be nicer if the rig or trailer were not attached with
chains!:) Would hate to be the other guy next to you though! :( I rolled my trailer once (did a 360* roll over and when the cops showed up I just said the trailer popped off the ball and they drove off. Apparenty some do gooder called in a rollover accident. Good thing they did not look at my safety chains. They were twisted into a 360* twist!

Please use safety chains ...... I once did a 360' and jacknifed the suzuki into the FJ55 tow rig ( major rear quarter crunching ) bad enough to rip the 3/8 plate tow bar mounts from the bumper on a very icy off ramp in Everett .......
