: coil kit for cj7?
martyfowler 09-13-2004, 03:03 AM first off, i apologize for the dumbass newbie question, and i did search first.
one of my wheelin' buddies has a cj7 with 6 inch lift springs (spua). this thing is super stiff with almost no flex. i suggested that we find some stock springs and do a spring over on it, but he is thinking about doing 4-links with coils. im a zuk guy and im about to install the coil kit from shaffers offroad on my samurai. my question is, does anyone sell a kit like this for a cj.
flame away if you wish, but hopefully someone can answer my question. thanks in advance, -marty

martyfowler 09-13-2004, 11:14 AM thanks for the info guys. man that black diamond kit is high as giraffe nuts. i'll check with shaffers though. the zuk kit he sells is pretty nice, and is less than $1500. hopefully he has a jeep kit that is comparable. thanks again, -marty
coyote11 09-13-2004, 11:58 AM tomken in Colorado has a nice kit. http://www.tomken.com/
Black diamond is the only one I have seen, but if Shaffer has one I bet it is cheeper too.$$$$
Bgcj5 09-13-2004, 01:46 PM That tomkin kit looks pretty nice, I wish that they had some close up pics though. Last I heard the Shaffer kit wasnt available yet but hopefuuly I am wrong because it looked like a quality kit esp for the money.
yes Shaffer's is in the building stage of a CJ/YJ Coil Kit. we've got teh donor jeep in here, and most of the part's lined out, we're waiting for the "project Unlimited" to get fiished and a few other long term's in teh shop before we jump balls deep into a complete frame down design.
guestimated ETA for a production kit is halloween...
ddestruel 09-13-2004, 02:57 PM I have heard talk of a few shops offering parts pieces and full kits.
I seem to recall a thread prior to this one about this in Newbie a year or two ago. discussing using the AFW UPPER coil buckets, RE longarm pieces, RE axle kit to set up the brackets, thus i have hear the people who have done this that it is easy to tune witht he single frame mount on each side and trackbar.
Use you imagination, at least its something else to ponder

It's kind of a cheesy bolt on deal. I guess it flexes OK, but 1500 dollars would be better invested in a long arm kit.

gumbojeepyj 09-14-2004, 02:08 AM buy some RE coils, some 1/4-3/8 plate for brackets and perches, RE joints and DOM and knock yourself out. :smokin:
rockcrawler304 09-14-2004, 09:21 AM The Tomkin kit does look nioce but some better close up pics would help. Seen some kits with a lot of crap hanging way below the axle.

yep its a bolt on deal...but who asked for a full on custom fab coil kit?

Well, the bolt on crap looks like my old pro-comp TJ lift, only a lot less durable. And I hated that lift and am swapping on long-arms. So I think it would be better to spend the money 2700 dollars for a RE kit, than throw good money after bad later on.

I wheeled with a guy who had one a few months ago. It flexed well until he spit a spring.
Benzz0 09-15-2004, 06:56 AM if you are good at fabbin' find a used RE kit for a TJ and have at it with some 1/4" plate - fab some link brackets get a clocking ring for the D300, make a flat skid, etc - there should be no reason you cannot think outside the box on this type of project - the brackets maybe a little bit wider than the CJ frame (RE kit wise) but that aint nothing a little box tubing cut/welded cannot fix...
I have bee ncontemplating this on my Cj5...still contemplating - but I have time on my hands...about 7 hours worth :emb:
lockedandlowded 09-15-2004, 10:46 AM I should be starting on my CJ coil idea next month. I plan to use two mounts on the frame and use a trac bar. Kinda like a TJ Long Arm but the upper arm will be mounted directly above the lower. The coil will set above it. The axle mount is 1/4 thick 6x3 square that I cut out to fit on my 44. I plan to use 2 1/2 Johnny joints at the frame and 1.5" x .250 wall tubing sleeved with 1 3/4 in x .095 wall dom. As for the coil buckets I have an idea about fabbing some, but would rather buy some. Anyone know where to get a decent bucket to fab up to my cj frame? Im just waiting on the $$ to buy the DOM, then I will start!
nobody20 09-15-2004, 09:55 PM What about using Poly Performance's coilover TJ kit? Poly is a vendor on this board.
