well, i have been busy with my scout lately. i have the rear done and the the engine/tranny/xcase in with a new crossmember i made from some 3" channel iron. i was able to just modify the origional motor mounts on the 350 to work with the way i wanted to mount the motor (low). the pullies sit just above the front axles, i think its about perfect. the whole body is moved back 8" from its origional place on the frame, so i am having steering box issues (it sit directly IN the grill) and the steering column needs to be lengthened badly. I really wish there were a way to flip the direction that my steering box turns. if this were possible i could move it back and move the pitmant arm from the back swing to the front. any ideas? anyway i have several things that need to be done to make it drivable, but i dont have any more money for a very long time (school starts in 2 weeks). as of now i need to mount the steering box and figure out something for draglinks; find some spring plates for the rear axle; design, buy, fab, and install a hydro clutch set up along with buying the flywheel clutch plate.....etc....all that; get the motor running (may need a rebuild, i have no idea); drivelines; and last but not least......all wirering.
heres a few pics of the flex im getting from it right now.

the second picture is hilarious, I couldn't see the chain at first and was wondering how it was just hanging in midiar! maybe your floor was crooked when welding it?! looks good.

What steering box is that? A Scout II steering box mounts outside the frame and the pitman arm points forward. It also looks like you have room for a Saginaw 4-bolt steering box, mounts inside the frame rail. Look at a Wagoneer or old GM fullsize car.

I have one of those sagnaw boxes sitting in the garage. i was thinking about using it. . . .tomorrow is steering set up day, so we will see which on i decide on. either way both of them have the pitmant pointing back, and i need one pointing forward......the SII would be perfect, but they are a bit spendy and hard to come by, im sure i will figure something about with what i have.
thanks for the heads up and good comments,

Chev Astro vans have a box that is the same as the Saginaw box but with a forward facing pitman arm.

I like the way the fenders are cut in the back. I may do that to mine.

sure, but does it work in a way that will make my tires turn the correct direction? because i can pull the pitmant off of my current box and flip it around, but it will make my tires turn the wrong way. . . . .
i think im going to wait on steering and check out that box though.
thanks,

78-79 Bronco also has a foreward facing pittman arm. Mounts outside the frame like a SII box.

I saw steering linkage on a Heep once that ran from the steering box to a pivot on the pass side frame, and from there back across to the drivers side spindle. kindof a cheap crossover steering but it worked really well for him. he was running it hard in the sand dunes. it was in a magazine article in the last few months. i'll see if I can dig it up tomorrow.
