I need to know if anyone has done this. I am having trouble with the drag link and Tie rod being too long. I installed the WJ right outer knuckle and am purchasing the left outer knuckle in hopes it will make things line up. If anyone has info I'd sure appreciate it. I want to avoid making my own adjusting links, the wj ones are real big. I could use the tie rod ends and build chromo links but I'd rather not. Thanks in advance.:usa:

xj35s,

...just out of curiousity: Did you buy those knuckles new from the dealer? How much did they cost you (or the one you already got)?

Also, did you read that article (http://www.burnsvilleoffroad.com/01_02.html)? Did you use washers as described in said article? Or was that not necessary (on your XJ)?
Quote:"The only out of the ordinary modification needed was the hub needs to be spaced out about .25" in order to have the axle u-joint working in the proper plane. A couple of washers on each hub bolt will take care of this."

Then, what did you do about the disk(s)? Did you reuse the XJ disks or did you redrill the WJ disk(s)?

Last one: What year XJ are doing this (since the older XJs use different hubs and brake parts).

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks,

AR.

I'm doing this on an '87 XJ. Can't use XJ brakes the WJ are tottaly different. I bought both knuckles, brakes, and links used=$400. I need to make my own tie rod adjusting link(not mentioned at brunsville off-road).I am reusing my drag link for now anyway. I'm not sure about the washers yet I'm still waiting for the left outer knuckle and brakes to be removed from the doner vehicle. Cost $25 for the steel tube I'm using for the tie rod link and $125 to have it tapped.I'm looking for the left and right hand taps so I can tap the tube myself and be able to tap others as well. The Grand Cherokee tie rod ends are big and worth reusing,They bolt right to the xj knuckles/pitman too. but I need to change the left outer knuckle because the brakes are huge and it'd pull to the right if I kept the xj brakes on the left. I'll try to get a good write up done on the whole thing and post it's location for all of you.
Thanks for the interest in this project,Earl.

Thats great info- I've been thinking about this swap for a while.

Hadn't thought about the brake issue though. Would it be possible for you to take a pic of the brake hardware?

I have a 86 axle with the early knuckles and brakes and a set of the later ones on my spare axle. I'm curious if the WJ knuckles have the same caliper mounts as the later XJ (91+) knuckles or if its completly different.

xj35s (Earl),

thank you for your detailed response! This is certainly an interesting project, --but cost seems still high as long as used WJ front ends are relatively rare and new.

Please keep us informed in word and image on how your project comes along. :-)

Appreciated,

AR.

This seemed like a good post to mention this on. We are currently building a Full Hi Steer system for the Dana30. This is not like the M.O.R.E. kit that is only crossover it is true Hi-Steer. The price has not been finalized. We are in the process of doing some final testing on the kit to look for any improvements we could make. I will post pics as soon as possible. Email me with any questions.

Who's WE? I'm a do it yourselfer, but it'd be nice to buy a bolt on kit and be done with it. If you want to see my rig and the long arms I built go to www.jeeprus.org and check out the tech section.
So who is building a hi steer system for the d-30?
Thanks, Earl
