: Bedliner Questions/Opinions/Comments
Mr McGee 01-28-2002, 05:10 PM Ok guys...
I may be a "newbie" but i have a serious question and i would like to hear some opinions and how you did it
I want to line the bottom of my 78 FJ40 tub with a bedliner (something harder and thinner) [Rhino liner?] Or is this even necessary and if not, what should i coat it with? In the bed i have 14ga. diamond plate steel and need a "cushier" liner. Could you guys direct me in buying the right one? I will be mostly on-road (im 15 and this will be my first car) so i dont need something "bulletproof", just strong.
Any opinions would be appreciated and how easy the application was. Also, im really cheap so im looking for *value*. :D
Thanks--Max

woody 01-29-2002, 12:10 PM Hey Max...nice to see you online!
I've used Gator Guard and Rhino and couple others. Realistically, they are all comparable. Prep is the critical part. For my truck, I sprayed it on with an undercoating gun. In my pickup bed, just a roller. IMO, the gun was easier to do. (you can borrow mine if you opt to) Just don't get it on anything you don't plan to leave it on for a long time, including clothes and skin.
IMO, buy whatever's on special....IIRC, Herculiner has been on special at Menards, and it's only like 6 blocks from you! lol
arndog 01-29-2002, 12:54 PM I used herculiner on mine and it worked great. Not sure about the cushy feel you are looking for but for wear and looks it is awesome

Mr McGee 01-29-2002, 03:00 PM Thanks for the ideas!
Brian--I'll have to take you up on the gun offer.:D
What i want inside is something that wont hurt my knees on the diamond plate (brian-you've seen it) as it would most likely be uncomfortable.
The Herculiner sounds good for the inner, and the 3m i think ill use for the bottom--how much does it cost and is it pretty durable? (the 3m)
The tub isn't off yet:( It'll be off when i line tho... But, tonight should be the big welding night!! :D After we get the bed welded in, ill take some pics. if not, ill set the stuff in and post that. Cant wait--been thinkin about it for a week! :D
Thanks for all the help and advise!

<ring><ring>Hello? Insurance company? Can you up my coverage?!?
heh heh heh
You can crawl around in the bed of my pickup and get an idea as to how easy it is....not terribly, but IMO much better than the plastic POS bedliner that was in there.
See ya in the next few days....

:rasta: u havent done it yet? jiMMy
Mr McGee 01-31-2002, 08:13 PM Nooo, not yet. My plan is to weld/assemble the tub, then remove the tub as one whole piece (as the tub was so sh*tty that it would have fallen apart) then sandblast/paint the frame. Should start the weld-fest this weekend!! When I have the tub off is when i'll do the bottom, and i'll do the bed when i have it together after the frame is sandblasted, etc.... I've got plans and a lot of work cut out if i want it done by september! :ohmygod:
I just wanted ideas for when i get that far...
If brian can do it in a month, i can do it in 9! :D
You want pictures? Ill try to post some on tripod or something then ill post a link to the page. Gotta get me a red star!

jeepps 01-31-2002, 09:26 PM I'll be Herculining my FJ-40 this weekend. I'll take some pretty good pictures and post them on my site. Last weekend we prepped the tub and sprayed it with Rustoleum.

See current pictures at http://whitejeep.com/fj why did you paint it? the directions on teh herculine says to use xelene(paint thinner) this strips teh crap off and makes for a nice alomoast bare metal surface for teh herculiner to adhear too! jiMMy
ironpig70 02-02-2002, 08:56 AM herculine the inside of the tub for the underside i'm using some stuff from eastwood it's a two part system has this orange paint that chemically changes rust and makes it stable then you can paint it or leave it alone i'm going to paint it black with there frame paint. have the book at home the kit is like $60:D and will cover a good chunk of the frame too.:D

It was recommended by a friend who used Herc. Rustoleum is a rust prevention paint, kind of like POR-15. Instead of just covering the tub with Herc, we figured we would prevent any future rust too.
The Herc looks great but is still drying. I'll take some pictures and post them by Thursday.
TxCruzr 02-04-2002, 05:30 PM I herculined the bed of my FJ-40 and it looks great. I plan on redoing a few parts since I was in a rush the first time I did it. Its not quit as strong as rhino, but far cheaper and easy to repare. Make sure you use some thick gloves. I got it all over my arms and hands....used cheapo rubber gloves.
I can send you a few pictures if you e-mail me.

Not sure if this is the answer you want or if it will work for you, but here is what I recently did to my fullsize blazer that had some floorboard patching done and has seemed to hold up quite well so far.
Go to the auto parts store and buy a hand held sandblaster that runs off of the air compressor. It will have a handle/knozzel that looks like a garden hose attachment. It will also have a cup that screws on to the base of the hose thingy... ( I had one at home that I bought about 5 years ago and worked for crap sandblasting) They have gravity feed paint guns, but this seemed to be cheaper and less of a mess
Next go an buy about 1 gallon of rustoleum (or paint of preference) and some thinner.
mix paint/thinner (or shoot with no thinner, super thick, sprays better with thin.)
Put in gun and spray away. Comes out actually pretty good. Apply 1-2 coats and let dry. ( I let mine sit for 1 week, not sure of actually dry time).
I did pretty much the whole underneath of my blazer body and the inner fenders.
