I am looking at buying a 1979 F250, and the guy I am buying it from doesn't know much about trucks. He said he wasn't sure which engine it had in it. He said it might even be a 6 cylinder but I didn't think they came in f250s?
Also how do you tell the difference between a dana 44 hd and a dana 60, which one of these axles were likely to come in this truck? Thanks!!

The 300 strait 6 did come in these trucks if I remember correctly. It was a great motor for them too. That's about all I can help you with. Sorry. :(

300, 351M, 400 where the engines
for the axle just look for the casting number by the diff. it'll say 44 or 60.

iirc, the 351 was standard and the 300 was a "downgrade" so you freed up a little cash when buying the truck new.
EDIT: for the axle, look for the casting number, and if you can't read it, check to see if the truck has balljoints or kingpins. Kingpins means you hit it big :D

no it wont. Youd need to change the tranny. IMHO, well worth the effort, unless you wanted to stuff a 460 into there.

the 351W WILL bolt up to the 300 tranny though. maybe not worth it though dependin on which trans it is.

In an over 8500 GVWR truck(assuming that's what it is) a 300 will be backed by a 4 speed(T18 or NP 435) or a C6, which you can bolt your W right up to provided you have the proper flywheel/flexplate for the W(they are 28oz. Imbalance, 300's are internally balanced.) In a lighter GVWR app, a C4 is possible, but, much less likley with a 300 than with a 302, and highly unlikley in a 4x4.
To mount the 351W, you'll need to get a V8 rad, and mounts for a 302(I think frame stands too) and I hope you don't plan on headers...
All that is if it has a 300... if it has a M/400, gotta change the tranny too...

heh, whoops, I brain farted and forgot about the 300. Goes to show how much I care about em (and how often I seen em in F250's)
