: sub frame on xj
terrible1 09-16-2004, 02:43 PM ive seen a few xjs that have been mounted on frames in the sick ass xj post. it was just a few pics and was wondering if anyone new were to find a run down on how it was done. i remember reading a short description on here but nothing with details or pics. it seems like a good idea and fun project any info would be great.
kewlkatdady 09-16-2004, 03:02 PM most of what I've seen is just sleeving the uni with c-channel.
Why are you wanting to "put in a frame"?
terrible1 09-16-2004, 04:40 PM most of what I've seen is just sleeving the uni with c-channel.
Why are you wanting to "put in a frame"?
i just read the article that’s on here about it. im not for sure going to do it it just seems like it would give stronger places to mount front and rear shocks and other things that’s kind of why im asking about it just to see if its really worth it and what i could get out of it that you cant do as well with the unibody.
i just want to look into it further and find out more about it is all.

your wanting to add a subframe just so you can relocate your shocks? :shaking:
1HDXJ 09-16-2004, 06:19 PM I can relate, my rear shocks bolts have pulled themselves out plenty of times. I built a simplt c shaped clamp with 1/4" and drilled a hole through the side and bolted the c-clamp to the unibody and welded 1 1/2" dom tube to the clamps and welded some custom mounts for the shocks. One thing I've heard good things about is the XJ unibody stiffiners you can buy. They would be great attachment points for rock sliders !
BUCKYXJ 09-16-2004, 07:59 PM yeah lots of people have done subframes I will probably end up doing a chevy subframe on mine instead of boxing the frames that way all I gotta do is bolt the body to the frame or I may just build a ladder frame for it.
DIG IT
Do a search for subframe or boxing frame.
creeprs 09-16-2004, 10:10 PM I built a complete subframe under mine, my 4 link rear hangs off of it, the reason? It prevent the twisting that unibodies have when flexing out,
1HDXJ 09-17-2004, 08:38 AM GOD yes, before I stiffined up my unibody, tucking 35 boggers in the fenders would not let me open any of my doors or my rear hatch . That twisiting will also break factory welds and cause your junk to leak in the rain. I just ripped the carpet out and drilled holes in my floor and Herculined it.
terrible1 09-17-2004, 08:46 AM Thanks for the advise it sounds like a good idea I was planning on doing a 3 or four link and was worried about body twist so thanks once again
terrible1 09-17-2004, 08:49 AM I built a complete subframe under mine, my 4 link rear hangs off of it, the reason? It prevent the twisting that unibodies have when flexing out,
do you have any pics by chance so i can get a better idea of what you have done
my email is carson.gowdy@coors.com or you can post them here if you have any thanks.
ashmanjeepXJ 09-17-2004, 11:28 AM Do a serach.
And dont do a chevy frame that is just hack.
ROLLIN33S 09-17-2004, 04:34 PM (1HDXJ) how exactly did you stiffin up your unibody, also pics would be helpfull
Search on www.naxja.org for sleeving the frame rails in the modified tech forum. Use 4"x6" .25 wall rectangular tubing, cut it in half length-wise to create two 4"x3"x3" c-channel sections. Cut each c-channel section into three parts to follow the contours of the sub-frame. Plate it from behind the LCA mount to in front of the leaf spring hanger. You'll need a 5-foot section. When you're done with that you'll have the hang enough to figure out the rear or forward sections if you still want more punishment.
1HDXJ 09-17-2004, 08:53 PM Havent got the pic's up yet but i simply bent up some 1/4" plate into a u shape drilled 5/8" holes through 2 sides and then drilled 5/8" holes through the side of the unibody and slid the bracket in place and bolted it up. Did that on each side in 4 places and welded 1.5" DOM tube for crossmembers. I also ran 1.5" DOM parallel to the unibody and tied the tube all together. works verry well !
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 08:41 AM I did some frame reinforcment with sleeving and a rear crossmember.
Not quite done, It will have attachements from the old leaf hangers to the new Crossmember, sleeved from bumper mount to crossmember.
Everything is still temp, mocked up and tack welded.

Remember the biggest part of subframing a XJ frame is to make sure and use lots of rossette welds. If you don't you aren't attaching the new metal to the existing frame with much stregth at all. It will be very weak in comparison to being rossette welded, alot! Other than that if you are doing frame reinforcement make sure to add a full cage to tie everything together. Once you start to reinforce the XJ unibody as much as a subframe type thing you need to keep going with the cage idea otherwise you can create some bigger stress points than you started with.
hinkley
BTW check out naxja you will find out lots of info on the unibody and how to mod to it.

Fucker throws a fit on NAXJA, then flees over here? WTF does he expect from PBB a nice soft reacharound and a tall frothy glass of breastmilk?
Its just a matter of time before he's gets run off of here, and goes over to JU, and in all his glory, shows off his Kitty diarrhea welds... :shaking:
Beezil 09-19-2004, 04:51 PM whats wrong owl?
are you still upset that naxja called you on your photoshopped weld job?
dude, relax. come to grips with the fact you were caught, and that you KNOW those welds sucked, and that you KNOW that you sounded retarded for saying "rosette welds are not needed" and you KNOW you were gonna catch hell for putting a huge rectangular tube directly UNDER your frame rail to act as a "snag all"
Improvement in your fabrication abilities and designs comes from self-realization, and your ability to listen to critique and become involved in a dialogue with people who know more than you.
WE ARE TRYING TO HELP YOU.
your "anti-naxja" sig is a joke, how disappointing.
have fun posting your pics in hopes you'll find a forum that will worship you instead of pointing out your mistakes.
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 05:44 PM Photoshop weld grind was an obvious joke, but you guys belong to a Cherokee only club, so what did I expect. If you looked at the post, it was posted at 12:31am and said, I ran up there real quick and grinded the welds. Best welds youve ever seen. :: DUR ::.
Tag said welds arent done, Hinkley u fat fuck, I didnt flee over here, I was here long before I tried NAXJA, you newb.
Looks tons better now, two syllable words like "progress" are obviously too much for you clubbers
Beezil, you have always been helpful and I respect everything you say, and do with metal. No punchline.
I expect hashes of shit on PBB, its Pirate after all, but a ding dong short arm guy like Hinkley, and a bolt on queen telling me my "fab skills" suck is just plain funny.
oh and I have this .gif now: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
I have put the motor in, which most of the leet fabbers on NAXJA couldnt even handle, done the axle, trans, T Case and EFI swap, welded tons, and built my rig in 1995, before you had Forums and Polls about "Rough Country or Trailmaster, which is better".
Fuck NAXJA, fuck you Hinkley
I want my $20 back so I can buy some Truck Nutz :flipoff2:
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 06:01 PM BajaXJ, I understand you weld for a living, So I guess its no suprise you "upgrade" your Jeep from quadratech.com I didnt get run out of anywhere, You keep saying fab skills but how hard is it to stick rubber in your wheelwells with sheet screws, your a joke, I posted here to help, you posted here hoping to win some internet battle in which u sorely lost weeks ago. Dont you have a shopping cart to check out somwhere kid ?
and you KNOW you were gonna catch hell for putting a huge rectangular tube directly UNDER your frame rail to act as a "snag all".
My rear crossmember is 1" Higher than my Trans crossmember, WHOA  bet you didnt know that. It wont have ANYTHING hanging down from it. Should I have cut out the floor, removed the back seats and welded tabs to the tubed rollcage ?
Lets be honest Beezil, XJs arent exactly tube framed, rock crawling gods. I love what you have done with your Jeep. But it is in fact an easy way out. You have taken the Wagon out of the XJ and built mostly a tube chassi'd buggy. Keeping Leather, AC, 4 seats and a cargo area, still be able to do 70mph to MOAB, wheel with you and come home is HARD. chopping off everything and making it a trailered buggy is challenging, but not as hard as keeping the SUV in it. Yep malls AND helldorado.
David Taylor 09-19-2004, 06:38 PM .
My rear crossmember is 1" Higher than my Trans crossmember, WHOA
Then it sounds like your trans crossmember is way to low.

Gee and I wonder why you get so much crap. You attitude sucks. Just like I said before you caught crap for your attitude not your fabbing. I'm sure with an attitude like yours ou have lots of freinds. You don't know from adam and you want to call me names because I question the fact you stated rossette welds were crap. You don't have a fucking clue. Someday you might grow up and realize until your attitude is what gets you all the greif. So simmer down and quite acting like an ass.
If you can't calm the hell down you might want to come back and post up you want your money back, I'm sure there are enough guys to pitch in .02 cents each to make up your 30.00 membership fee. Sorry just looked you aren't a member!

BTW if you really think I'm a newb at this stuff you really don't have a clue.
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 06:57 PM Maybe when I grow up Ill lurn tu spel like Hinkley.
I dont know you or want to know you, But youre a shit talking elitist.Im not going to hash this out again with someone of your calibur, but take a look here ding dong: http://www.owlie.omgwtfpwnage.com/welds.jpg
Where else should I attach it? since its attached top, bottom, middle underneath etc. its seven pieces per side.
My attitude sucks yea, when "know-it-alls" ring in who didnt bother to read all the posts and jumped to the end to huff and huff about how big their balls are on the internet.
I wish I had spent my money for a membership here instead of NAXJA IS FOR PUSSIES.
Slapping steel on a Jeep will not necessarily make it stronger, just heavier. How much strength do you think you gained by adding more sheetmetal and boogered welding wire?

Mark Hinkley 09-19-2004, 07:16 PM Maybe when I grow up Ill lurn tu spel like Hinkley.
Good one, never heard that before. But I can weld. (Just because you're still be a dick)
I dont know you or want to know you, But youre a shit talking elitist.Im not going to hash this out again with someone of your calibur,
It has only to do with your attitude. Before you go a spout off something like "Rosette welds are crap" you might want to think about how stupid that makes you look. If you don't have the knowledge to spout the crap then STFU! You might learn something.
but take a look here ding dong:
Where else should I attach it? since its attached top, bottom, middle underneath etc. its seven pieces per side.
You can weld it all the way around but your not going to gain all that much strength. Your sheer is attached just on the edges where it WILL tear first. The Rosette welds spread you sheer from the two materials, the frame and the added plate. Thus giving more strength. I asked you a question at the beginning, but you want to be too stupid to realize what I was trying to get you to do, and that was think! You've attached all that nice thick material right where the this ass unibody is going to be it's weakest, the edges. If you attach the two together over the surface area the strength gain will be much greater.
So you can keep your attitude up or you can realize we were trying to help even with your stupid attitude. If you think you can be an ass like you were in the now deleted thread and not get some crap for it, WAKE UP!
I'm the farthest thing from an elitist you'll ever see. I just call crap, crap and you have a crap attitude! So drop the ego and realize you have more to learn than just welding techniques, how to take criticism thru internet crap.
My attitude sucks yea, when "know-it-alls" ring in who didnt bother to read all the posts and jumped to the end to huff and huff about how big their balls are on the internet.
I wish I had spent my money for a membership here instead of NAXJA IS FOR PUSSIES.
BTW when I did spell check for my shit ass spelling you have about 5 or 6 errors yourself. (not counting you attempt at humor) Again saying shit without knowledge! :(
I would suggest if you want to get civil you might want to knock of the NAXJA is for pussy crap, make you look even worst!
hinkley
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 07:27 PM Slapping steel on a Jeep will not necessarily make it stronger, just heavier. How much strength do you think you gained by adding more sheetmetal and boogered welding wire?
sheetmetal :shaking:
Ask BajaXJ about sheetmetal, Hes a pro with it. Thats 1/8" and 3/16" mild steel.
you still dont get Hinkley, all those pieces penetrate the steel and the unibody.
Your sheer is attached just on the edges where it WILL tear first Are you blind? Or do you have images turned off?
I never said plug welds are crap, I said they are useless. They are useless in this case because I HAVE plug welds. up down left right inside outside etc. drilling a hole 4 inches away in any direction of the already penetrated welds does what for me? And speaking of attitude.. this is the reason I hate your fuckin guts. everything out of your mouth sounds like my bully 10yr old cousin.. stupid this and your an idiot that..
LOOK AT IT!!!!!! pieces are penetrated every few inches.. not just outside.. not just underneath..
And for the spelling, maybe I should have worded it as grammar, after all,you had to use a spell checker on my post hrhrhrhr :grinpimp:

sheetmetal :shaking:
Ask BajaXJ about sheetmetal, Hes a pro with it. Thats 1/8" and 3/16" mild steel.
I was referring to the shape of the steel, not the guage. Form, not mass, is what provides strength. Your welds are certainly not helping matters either.

Edit: My wife's looking over my shoulder, and says "I can weld better than that Cracker!"
idahoxj 09-19-2004, 08:11 PM Post up your in progress pics. Maybe throw your "grinding" pic in and see if you get sympathy here. You got all upset and ran away crying because people gave you honest critisism and were trying to help you build a better jeep. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_9_7.gif I don't understand why you post up on pirate if you can't take critisism from NAXJA.
Check out ashmanjeepxj's sleeving. He did it right. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=139642&page=2
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 09:19 PM An honest critiscm on a post that said: progress pics, welds are just tacked.
I can handle that, some fat fuck beer jockey with a rustys short arm kit on his dana35 and an aol connection, I wont accept.
I da hoe XJ I couldnt give a shit about iur sympathy.Im certainly not the one who tried to instigate anything on this board.
and this following comment should explain my reason for thinking naxja is for the pride community:
Unlike JU and PBB, naxja is a club, not a forum. the dues you pay are to be a member of a club.
If my golf club dues came with with assfucks with big ball syndrome comments.; We would have some police on the premisis.
When fuck up posters, with opinions about my "progress posts", show pics of their Spare tire carrier and "its a jeep thing sticker, start telling me what Im doing wrong and what they would do different, I get a little upset.
If you have pics, post them. I will be more than happy to rip you a new asshole. Cuz unless you have invented a machine for perpetual motion, I will find a fault, and I will beat it to death. Just like the sub 100IQ doorbells did on that particular post.
Roll up. Show em' and prove your better.
Bryan C calling me a Newb is just about the funniest quote on this post.
NEWB, DAN (dumb ass newb), JU user etc is reserved for the little dick crowd.
Edit: My wife's looking over my shoulder, and says "I can weld better than that Cracker!" OK nig nog, roll up with your pics.
Post anything you have welded, or built Id love to see your Jeep. Show me how much better your wife thinks you are.
This is the forum where you can boast about how bad ass you are, and I can call you a fuckin NEWB.
If im going to spend money to post on a forum, Its not going to be on NAXJA. you dont like it? I dont care.
1HDXJ 09-19-2004, 09:34 PM I like that idea for the crossmember that ties in the (I guess you call them spring hangers?) I just got some dom tube and get it bent so the driveshaft wouldnt hit. I 1/4" diamond plated my hangers and used the 1.5" tube to tie into my front long arm mounts so the lockers wouldnt crunch it like a beer can !
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 09:39 PM !HDXJ
almost exactly what Im trying to do, except it will be more like mini traction bars.
just a brace to tie the front, to the rear crossmeber, to the strongest point on the rear of the unibody.
idahoxj 09-19-2004, 09:46 PM wow that i da hoe joke was funny when I was ten. In the course of that thread you said rosette welds were usless, which anyone here will disagree with. You said you were going to run bolts through the framerails instead. You were told that was a bad idea so you got all defensive. I weld with a stick welder and all my welds are 100x better than the buggers you sneezed all over your frame rails. :flipoff2:
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 09:51 PM then post em.
show me your welds or show me your bolt ons.
Id love to see these bad ass welds of yours.
U nutsacks still dont get the "progress pics" " welds are just tacked" part.
Ill say it again, show me your welded Jeep.
Then comment underneath about what stage its in so I can ignore it and bag on you.
please
idahoxj 09-19-2004, 09:54 PM Look in my sig. Theres not a lot of pics, just a few after my build up. But I'm not ashamed of them and I didn't need to grind any of them, and I don't need to write "progress pic" by them so I feel protected from critisism. There arent really any bolt ons so you might be disapointed. :flipoff2:
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 10:04 PM killer axles, awesome low steer arms.
You fuckin newb, I would have done it right instead of wasting my time on a shitty Jeep like that.
I love how your stock type cast radius arms hang down below the frame. Did I would have done it differently
Its total junk and you need to learn how to build Jeeps before you post pics.
My Jeep is so much better
Sound familiar?
Now get pissed like I did.
I started the progress pics post.
I wanted feedback, yes. I wanted to show people what Im doing. I didnt want some jackoff posting about how better they are, and how they would have done it different. Have you ever called the chef out of the kitchen and told him the fish was good but I would do it like this...
I have that entire post saved, so if you need a quote off it, let me know
THE_OWL 09-19-2004, 10:06 PM the grinding pic is a joke, it was a photoshopped (badly ) pic of welds .
Even if the welds were done by arlen Ness, I would grind them. Its what I am going for under there.
If you have something to say thats critical, cool. If youre going to tell me how you would do it differently, then show me, dont brag about the porsche youre GOING to buy
Bryan C. 09-19-2004, 10:28 PM Bryan C calling me a Newb is just about the funniest quote on this post.

You are the whiney little bitch who can't take criticism, don't deflect that hostlity towards us. If you can weld, why don't you show us some finished pics instead of just defending your "progress, tack welded pics." I have nothing to prove and never commented on your welding(or lack thereof) skills. I have been bagged on, I have been ridiculed, It doesnt bother me. Its assholes with opinions about what they "would" do, and people using stupid and idiot in every post they make (search hinkley, bajaxj and tell me im wrong)

whats the caster measurement on that thing? and aren't you a tad worried that the weld is on the inner c and could shear?
THE_OWL 09-20-2004, 08:24 AM Caster is way off at this point..
I need more positive caster, not sure how im going to get that yet.
Vehicle isnt being driven yet.
Those brackets have a good bite on them.
Looks beafy. It is the best choice for location considering the width of the axle, the height of my hoops (limited by MC and Air intake) and the size of my shocks (14")
We had them mounted on the C itself and it was way too tall.
Im 6-1" and couldnt see over the hood.

Will be much stronger as soon as I get it chromed

You asked for welding pics, so here you go:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=175733&highlight=scrambler+re-build
None of the welds were finished (ground down or cleaned up) and yes there are 6 plug (or rosette) welds per side of joint, 12 total per joint and 96 total in the entire frame along with multiple triangular braces and two 1/4in shear plates......so go ahead, tear me a new one :flipoff2:
Oh, and these are just progress pics as its not finished yet...much like yours :p
Justin
idahoxj 09-20-2004, 01:37 PM killer axles, awesome low steer arms.
I have that entire post saved, so if you need a quote off it, let me know
 Your arms hang below the frame rail too. I'm running the same axle too.
I was going to tell you I liked your setup but you had to go and be an ass. :flipoff2:
jeepmauler 09-20-2004, 02:24 PM I didn't read the whole thread,so not sure if an honest answer is relevant.I did the opposite of an "sub-frame".I made my cage the stressed member and tied my link suspension directly to the cage. The energy/load passed through the sheetmetal and was taken by the cage.In the end the remaining sheetmetal was purely cosmetic,it was basicaly a buggy built inside a vehicle.Withstood alot of hard rolls and HARD wheeling until it was finally dismantled with a gas axe and much malice.

Post anything you have welded, or built Id love to see your Jeep. Show me how much better your wife thinks you are.

If im going to spend money to post on a forum, Its not going to be on NAXJA. you dont like it? I dont care.
As long as you are proving your ignorance, you may as well add a little racism too...

THE_OWL 09-20-2004, 05:49 PM Edit: My wife's looking over my shoulder, and says "I can weld better than that Cracker!"
How much strength do you think you gained by adding more sheetmetal and boogered welding wire?
As long as you are proving your ignorance, you may as well add a little racism too...
Oh and dont forget this one:
I was referring to the shape of the steel, not the guage. Form, not mass, is what provides strength
Hello Kettle, This is Pot, You're BLACK!!!!!!!
EDIT: Are those earrings your wife has welded? whats with all the far off pics?
OOOOOO BURN!!

I'm a little late in this thread... but hey THE_OWL... what sort of trim are you running on those chopped fenders? I've been meaning to get around to doing that shit for months now. If you wouldn't mind, where did you buy it from? It looks really good.

Its ghetto trim from AutoZone, same as the chrome stuff on lowriders, but black
7$ for 36" i believe.
That's pretty cool, your wife does nice work. :smokin:
She says thanks.
Nice XJ, you have any pics up closer......................just saying it before The Owl does

Yea its in the driveway. Cant really say anything about that.
Its a work in progress.
Tell your wife this Cracker likes her earrings or whatever that thing is.. Looks like it fits nice.
The legs are 1/2" rebar if you need something for size reference. She'd make you one for a fair rice if you want something welded correctly for your rig.
We take Paypal.

THE_OWL 09-20-2004, 07:08 PM OK Otis since you dont want to show us, Ill show us.
Heres your beauty welds.. Looks fairy nice
And one question is that bracket really welded to the floow of the Unibody?
Oh man Im glad paypal offers a money back deal.
Thats some fucked up shit there.
And since you are ignoring the racist comment you made yeaterday, Ill point it out again. Cracker.

SeanP 09-20-2004, 07:12 PM Hinkley, you fat fawk :flipoff2:
:shaking:
Good lord, what a fucked up thread. Your ass, Owl, needs to be a member of the band just on principle.
1) The whole drawback to long arms/radius arms is how far they stick down below the body. You took that drawback to a new level with how far that crossmember falls.
2) Your radius arms are good for one run before they tweak. That angle is just hosed.
I have built my rig myself (with a little help from URF on the cage). I cannot tell you how much scrap steel is laying around from good ideas gone wrong. If you want to take your current iteration on the trail, go ahead. A bunch of folks here have tried to give you constructive advice, but you choose to be a dick. When you shiat breaks on the trail an no one wants to strap your ass back to the hiway, think about how your attitude has failed to "win friends and influence people"
SeanP
Now thats funny. I thought we had another bandwagon bagger. :D
Its ghetto trim from AutoZone, same as the chrome stuff on lowriders, but black
7$ for 36" i believe.
Maybe I'll get the chrome for that gangsta look :flipoff2:
I'll check out Autozone and see what they've got in stock. It will make my awful chop look like someone more competent than a retarded monkey was responsible for it. :p
And one question is that bracket really welded to the floow of the Unibody?
Yup. And to the subframe. I overbuild, cause I can't weld for shit (but still better than you). :flipoff2:
And since you are ignoring the racist comment you made yeaterday, Ill point it out again. Cracker.
Uhhh.... I'm white too, Cracker Ass Cracker. It's just the internet. Not real life.

Bryan C. 09-20-2004, 07:38 PM OK, Mr OWL. Since you have spent more time defending yourself instead of finishing your Jeep and posting pictures. I just thought I would maybe have you discuss some of the finer points of your front axle/suspension pic. I noted 1 or 2 points of interest that I would kindly ask you to discuss.
http://www.mrskull.com/bayarea4x4/Fixedit.jpg
I wish I could take credit for this pic, but the real artist shall remain nameless.
THE_OWL 09-20-2004, 09:01 PM OK, Mr OWL. Since you have spent more time defending yourself instead of finishing your Jeep and posting pictures. I just thought I would maybe have you discuss some of the finer points of your front axle/suspension pic. I noted 1 or 2 points of interest that I would kindly ask you to discuss.
Hey man, all that is getting replaced with titanium and carbon fiber.
Im waiting on my order from rusty's
And otis, if your going to make racial comments, then dont be upset when someone else does. And if your going to weld suspension points to the floor of your unibody, dont bag on some boogered filler welds. That is truly funny.
Good lord I just realized that link is sleeved and has a Heim Joint that belongs on one of my sandrails.
Is that a 1/2" heim there?
And Sean Im not sure what angles/crossmember your talking about, but my pic of my rear crossmember isnt that low at all.
And my front one drops 1.5" below the frame for one reason. And you would know this reason if you have done the Drivetrain swap I have.
Then engine wont sump. I could:
A) Raise the motor
Cant do that cuz I have approx 1/2" clearance between air assembly and hood now
B) Make a new Adaptor for the trans to tcase piece.
C) Drop the crossmember.
My radius arms are made of SOLID stock 1.5"
My Heims are 1-1/4".
My cross is 1/4" 2x4
Scraping along a rock on those pieces isnt a worry for me.
Billy@XJDB.com 09-20-2004, 09:11 PM ...And if your going to weld suspension points to the floor of your unibody, dont bag on some boogered filler welds....
