There's better pix of it, too... with better flex. How's this?

http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/custom/shopjunk/hybrid/disk7/MVC-008S.JPG

Hey, it's even a real-world flex fight... just not much of one. :)

Chet, not bad on the front flex, but that back end looks like it needs some help. Considering that it's (apparently) a stock width Toy axle, it's really not bad up front. But the back makes it look lame... sorry.

Chet nice toy, I have a couple questions for you. How do you have the links set up for the front end? What kind of coils are you using? and does it have coils in the rear?

Also :flipoff2: everyone he said "good" flex not the best. I think its great to see a home brew coil setup working.

Jeez harsh! :flipoff2:

I never said it was flexed all the way!

It is 4 link with a trac bar front and back. The front coils and back coils are XJ, fronts are 3" lift backs are 4" I think... (memory is slipping)

I agree though its not as cool as Scott's flex

I am thinking of changing the rear around next year to eliminate rear steer which is quite bad at times.

Longer links, lower frame mounts, etc... If the coils are XJ, I'm assuming that they're fronts both ends? You might try Aerostar rears for the rear, might work better (but it'll hurt stability unless you have some form of sway control) since they're a softer spring. Or have some custom-wound (Aerostars are a hell of a lot cheaper) for the rear.

How long/level are the rear links now?

FWIW, my rear arms are 38" center-to-center; my fronts are 36" center to center. My articulation steer is about 1-1.5" per axle at full twist; I figure that's pretty minimal.

Chet
01-29-2002, 09:23 AM
actually the way the truck is set up now it flexes really good and goes about anywhere I want it too. I really don't see much point in getting more flex than what is there now.

Biggest problem is the stock front end(read that as Birfields! ) and the rear steer.

1.if Chet wanted to show his coil setup and his GOOD pic he should have posted it in TOy tech, where it would be applicable
2.Chet posted it here for all to see and declared it a GOOD FLEX PIC, most likley hoping to get stroked for his coil set up

Yep. The life-n-times of the green thing, (Mantis) are "chronicled" in http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/custom/shopjunk

There's a lot of silly stuff in there, some just plain screwing around, and a lot of tech pics too. It's just an image directory; don't expect a lot of explanation of a particular part or the like.

Somewhere between four and six grand, counting *everything*, even the swiped parts off my other truck, the 44's, the base little red POS truck, etc. I was flickin' crap at a guy on the trail a few days ago, who'd spent more on a Dynatrac front end, than I have in my whole truck. But mine's ugly. Then again, if I put into mine, what he's got into his... I'd have eight ugly trucks. :)

As for Frosty... :flipoff2: until I see a flex shot of your rig!

Heheheh... I think I've seen some, it's not that bad... could be worse, he coulda dug up flex pics of Tinbender's :bender: instead of my parts pile.

Heres a pic of my zuk when I went to Arizona this summer.. now it's being retrofitted with a tube body ,38's, or 40's and trying to keep it the same height as my dads zuk with 33's :-). My frame with stock tires is the same height as my dads with his 33's so I need to do some lowering.. Also extending wheelbase and hopefully coilys.

BTW Scott.. let me know when you are going to run Indy.. I need to get some t-case gears before then since I had to sell mine to pay some debt this last summer. I have a kick ass line I want to try after A-hole :D.

Scott, checked out your pics. Very cool. How about some info on your front suspension links. What size tube? What did you use for joints? Looks like the top part of the arm is removed to imitate a wristed ford radius arm? How is the top link of the arm mounted to the axle. Looks very cool and very simple.:D I am wanting to do something like this to my bronco. Any info is appreciated. :D

Scott, how does that thing do on the street? Looks kinda like a slinky....cool on the trail moving VERY SLOW but maybe not that great taking a turn at 30mph? Just curious:rolleyes: I'm digging the front arms and am thinking that it might work really well with Coil-Overs.

Actually, it'd have *less* flex with coilovers, unless I went to about a 26" stroke coilover. That's why the shocks are halfway up the radius arms; I'm running 9012's on the back, and using just about the whole stroke of the shock, halfway up the arms. Lever arm setup ends up with the rear axle having roughly twice the travel at the axle, as the shock has, with the shocks halfway up. I have this weird feeling that a 26" stroke coilover, would cost more than the whole rest of the truck. :(

31 spline. Stock shafts, too. I'll put Moser shafts in it if I need to, but so far, my screaming GerbilPower engine, can't hurt it.

Front suspension is Rock Rod tube (1.5" OD) scraps from the shop; joints are urethane bushings throughout (no heim joints) and good eye on the wristed radius arm setup; that's exactly what it is. Top (and bottom) links are mounted to the axle with simple chassis tabs, intended for a roundy-round car. Amazing what you can find at the racetrack... :)
