and was wondering which is better, a solid steel deck or the trailers that are open in the middle?

I would think a trailer with a solid deck would enable to carry more... such as wood, etc. Besides parking your rig would be easier without help... :D

That's what I was thinking about the weight because the Cruzah is a pig. I have 8' of truck bed to haul crap and let my drunk a$$ sleep it off.:D

What's wrong with a wood deck?

Full deck will give you more options. But even using wood, it will still add up in the weight total. Had a over the wheel, 18 ft, 2 x 7500# axle wood decked trailer. It weighs just over 3,000#
Edit: due to my fat fingers

he he he you said wood.:D I live near the ocean so I was a little concerned about the wood deteriorating over time.

I went with full steel. It was cheaper than wood at the time, but I am glad I went with it. Seen too many in the mean time that are warped or broken..

I have a 18' with a full wood deck. I was thinking of a steel deck but I am glad I went with the wood. Add some rain and mud or snow and that steel deck can get really slippery.

I have a 18 ft. Wood trailer. The only think that I dont like is it catches all the oil. If you are a neat freak you may want the metal. It is easier to clean. It is a heavy bastard though:D

I have an open deck steel and I really like it because I can easily get under the rig to work on it or strap it down and when it leaks oil, it just goes on the road and not on the trailer. And when I need to carry other stuff, I just put down a plywood floor over the framework between the wheel tracks.

The open deck is nicer for tying down cars and supposedly the trailer doesn't move around as much when towing empty supposdly air flow under the deck makes it move around I don't believe it but that is what the trailer guys say. I got the full deck so I can haul other big stuff.

A couple of gallons of Tompson's Water Seal does wonders for a wood deck trailer. Or you could throw down a sheet of tin over where the oil would drip, if any. Just remember, wood doesn't hold temperature as bad as steel. Think about that in the middle of summer when you gotta lay down on the deck to tie down.

One of the first trailers I ever bought had a full wood deck. It wasn't sealed very good. It quickly rotted out. I put steel decking down for the runners where the tires go, and expanded metal inbetween that it seems to work out well.
