: strength of King pin Knuckles

I was told by the guys at dynatrac that this was a much stronger design than the ball joint style and I have seen pics in the past of ball joint style knuckles ripping off of the housing. Recently however I have seen a pic of a king pin knuckle broken and people seem to be building custom knuckles. I have a couple of these axles that I am planning on putting in my YJ for rear steer and I am wondering if I should build some custom units. It doesnt look that hard. especially if you made four at one time. Let me know how strong you think these are. Thanx:confused:

Are they :rainbow: ? Will they :nuke: ?

Welcome NEWBIE......:flipoff2: :flipoff2: DYNATRAC is right on that "truth". The "Kingpin" DANA 60 is very strong and is the # 1 axle to look for. You must have saw "WELDPRO" custom ones he was making......by the way that's the only pic I seen of 1 being broke.....they are a 10,000 pound rated axle. If you don't want them I'll GLADLY BUY THEM FROM YOU.....:D :D

no I think that I will hold on to them for now! lol The knuckle that was broken in that pic looked different than the one on my axles. I wonder if it was a dodge or a ford? It seemed like the metal was alot thinner than the chevy ones that I have and they are very obviously missing a cast in gusset at the top end. I am glad to hear what they are rated for though seeing as they are going under my jeep which only weighs 4000.

Check out these heavy duty kingpin knuckles:
http://www.wagonermachine.com/knucklepage.htm
I spoke w/Casey there & he said they're coming out
w/ a billet style knuckle, which will be even stronger
than what you see here. He didn't mention a price though

are they worth it or is it just over kill and if these knuckles are so strong why would anyone need those custom units?

if your refering to the pic of the broken knuckle in my rear steer post then yes that is a ford. the chevy and dodge is a-lot stronger, but if your running full hydraulic steering then it is possiable to pop it. that is only one pic ,i no of many more people that have had the same issue. thats why wagonner machine made there own knuckle. the reason those rotors are 6 lug instead of 8 was so it would fit a 15 inch rim.

what about welding more steel on to the knuckle to strengthen it at that point. I know that it is cast but I have been told that it can be done if you do it right.

That's what we do with the VW frontends in the buggies.

Now stock D60 knucks are Turds ??? ...give me a break ! sheesh man.... We gotta slow down a bit here...$1500 for Knuckles
$6k for axles $2k for a freekin t-case...If the sport keeps this up it will cost 100k for a pos trail rig, and the only people on the trails will be a**hole yuppies with checkbook machines.

dont worry about it if you are runnig the chevs welding is only going to cause a stress riser in the metal anyway
