: 14 bolt reiterated
DozerDan 01-29-2002, 12:55 PM Okay after doing a search :flipoff: I found a nice thread on the 14bolt.
Now heres my Q. Did anyone ever run 15" rims on the 8lug??? There was talk of it but i dont think anyone did it.
Also how much is shaving it gonna hurt the strength. For now I'm on 33's, but SOA with 3.5" springs and bigger meats in in the future.
I have a line on an 14 bolt for a good price (already geared and locked for what it will cost to do an 8.8) and am considering it.
Just looking for some more info before i invest my $.
I know i will prob never break a 14 bolt but at the same time it is gonanbe one BIG MOFO
Brian1 01-29-2002, 09:39 PM Yes you can fit 15" wheels on a 14 bolt. You may have to do a disc conversion. It all depends on the backspacing you use. I will be running 15" wheels on my 14 bolt w/discs.
If you are only running 33's you should definately shave the pumpkin. It wont hurt it. Do a search and there are pics of some shaved 14b. Also on ck5 there is a write up.

Right now the 14b is drums, I still need to figure out the total WMS to WMS, but backing plate to backingplate is 51", so i would assume it is close to what i want.
Where is "ck5"
Thanks for the info, the search feature was acting up some. Damn computers...
Hmmm 14bolt vs 8.8 hmm should i even be considering the 8.8 any more???

tigger4x 01-29-2002, 09:58 PM I am going out onna limb here in assuming that you are going to be using the 14BOLT in the rear and not on the front. Just like you I had the same thing to contemplate when upgrading to a DANA60 front and a 14BOLT rear in my '76 Cherokee. If I wanted to run the 15" rim I would have had to grind down my brake calipers to get them to fit. That was something I don't feel comfortable doing. The 15" rims would fit the 14 BOLT though. 16" are okay for some and have quite a selection of tires supposedly. I opted to run with 16.5" rims. A lot of people don't like the idea because when you air down the rim has a major tendancy to lose the bead. I am running the ROCKSTOMPER (www.rockstomper.com) beadlocks so I have no worries there. I spoke to Scott about 16.5" x 7" Chevy steel rims. Once the beadlocks are welded on, the rim width will be between 8 1/2" - 9" wide, depending on how thick the bead is on the tire I choose. Scott said I could run a 12.5" wide tire no problem. A 14.5" wide tire might be pushing it a little but some are doing it with no problems so far. This particular Chevy rim has an inner "beadlock" from the factory. To enhance its effectiveness I am going to weld in an additional beadline just fer because. The Rockstompers will cost about $430 with button head bolts shipped to my door. The tires I am getting from Daniel at USA6x6 for about $275 shipped to my door. The rims I got for a screaming steal, uuuhh I mean deal  $20!!! he he he
Sorry to ramble on ... hope this helps you out some.
H8monday 01-29-2002, 10:31 PM The disks are an easy, and cheap swap.
The calipers need to be grinded, buts its no big deal, your pulling metal a from a big fat portion of the casting.

EASY AND CHEAP now that is something I have never heard in conjunction with a Jeep.
Best I can figure this thing is 62" wide, my d35 is 61" (i think) so that is duable.
I will need rims, agian i can handle that
I just read through all the search stuff and didnt find any atricles on disks. I saw PYRO's site, but w/o the axle in front of my i cant follow what is done.
I may go to disks but for now the drums will fit.
Easy and cheap pah... :smokin: :D

There are alot of guys that know way too much about this kinda stuff. If you want to go to disc in the rear look up Misfit. I just bought a set of disc brackets for my 14FF for $65 shipped to my door. You will actually save weight by going to discs becaust those damn drums are heavy SOB's.
Like every body else said you can run 15" rims (steel) on the rear just fine (even if they did touch the drum rotates with the wheel so it is no big deal)...it is the front that you will have a problem with. You will need to grind the caliper for them to fit. If you go with 3.5" of backspacing you will have much less grinding to do.
High5 01-30-2002, 05:26 AM 15" rims fit the 14bolt just fine. i ran the stock drums on my c&c 14bolt for a while and now i have disc's. as for a front 60 if you endup getting one grind the calipers and brackets to fit 15's. the calipers and brackets on a d60 front are beefy units and the integrity of them is in no way in jepady whan they are ground down a bit to fit the 15" rims.
DozerDan 01-30-2002, 10:48 AM Nice, now if I can just figure out how to get this bad boy to fit under the Jeep.
From what i gather by reading the searched articles a FF14bolt is the best to go, it also is what is found under the duallie trucks and is 62" wide.
I found one geared 4.56 and with a detroit.. . What should be a fair price for it.
Would i be bettre off finding one in a yard and setting it up myself?
I will prob do disks but later on not now.
DozerDan 01-30-2002, 05:06 PM Any othing insitefull things... The guy is asking $750 for a 14bolt out of a dualie, so it should be FF, it is geared 456 (what i have now) and has a detroit. I would need to add perches and shock mounts (custom).
I plan to shave it down and maybe skid it, eventually i will ditch the drums for disks.
Am I missing anything. Is that price too much, I thikn it is a little high. for a used one.... but thats jsut me
I just grabbed a DRW cab/chassis 14 bolt at the junkyard 2 days ago. 4.56 gears, open, $125.00. A Detroit costs about $300.00. I'll install it myself, do a disc set-up and have under $600.00 in it.

H8monday 01-30-2002, 08:49 PM The discs are very easy swap, and only cost about $150.
$50 each for rotors = $100
$50 for calipers
You can find them cheaper if you shop around, but there will also be a core charge for the loaded calipers if you dont have some old ones lying around.
The brackets I made from 3/8 steel plate, but they can be bought from most fabrication shops or many race suppliers for about $15 a side. Position them, tack em in place double check the position and weld.

James K 01-30-2002, 09:04 PM H8, little off subject but could you post a few pictures of your traction bar bracketry on the 14 bolt, ie where you welded on the housing.
Thanks

DozerDan 01-31-2002, 11:45 AM Nice.
Any part numbers for those calipers and rotors??? What are they off of?
I like the way that looks.
Cliffy [JD] 01-31-2002, 12:06 PM The nice thing about the POR bb is you can get great info anywhere.
For example THIS (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14638) is located in the Chevy forum. Great place to find info on GM axles. :flipoff2:
It's a really good thread about this swap.
H8monday 01-31-2002, 12:08 PM Front calipers and rotors from an 80s Chevy 3/4 ton.
There is a guy selling, brackets for the 14 B disk brake conversion, over on the for sale board, for $65.
Even says no welding required.

Good job TNT!
Thats excactly, what the 14 bolt, is all about.
Cheap to buy, easy to set up, cheap to upgrade, easy to find,....did I mention cheap,...and almost indestructable..
$600 bucks is not a "Pie in the sky" cost to build and install a 14B, if you do the work yourself. And spare parts,...anytime, anywhere,..so breakdowns in Moab or other outa the way places dont leave you high and dry.
I had about an honest $1000, into mine with new gears, nad set up kit, brake lines, detroit, brackets, brakes and rotors.
kyrel69 01-31-2002, 08:34 PM fyi there is a guy that sell bracket for 100 on the k5 page and you get the spacer you need for the rotor. I got them and they look a little better and you get grade 8 bolts with it. 100 is shipped to you as well and he does not have a big waiting list.
DozerDan 02-01-2002, 09:25 AM Thanks for all the input.
My problem is Time and $. I dont have the time to go yard shopping. Unfortuatley I am stuck in east bumble fawk PA at school. Nor do I have hte $ to buy an already built one.
I am going to talk yo the guy about the price some. In the end I might jsut bite the bullet and buy the fawker...
Hell its not like I'm ever gonna break it.
God I hate this whole no money or free time shit of being in college............
To bad my shop is not set up for axle shit, or i'd just build my own completly..
