I have an '86 XJ w/ 2.8L, auto(unsure of numbers), & NP228. The 228 is a chain driven and doesn't seem to be the sturdiest thing around. What would be the easiest and/or most available gear driven t-case to put in. I am unsure of spline counts, but could change out shafts.

you could throw in an Atlas T-case if you wanted but it will cost you.:D

I know that would be the best and someday far away I may have that. Right now I'm looking for the most bang for about $200-250 used. Yards around here want 175 for another 228. Another Jeep case would be nicest. Advice on ease of swap for D300, NP231 etc.

Thanks, Tim

I'd have to say for that price a 231 would be the best bet. You could also throw in a 231 and mate it to a 241. This would give you a much better crawl ratio, and its not that expensive. Don't know much about the D300, but i'm looking into putting the 241 next to my 231. Its not expensive, just takes time and effort. Either way, if your going to replace somthing, might as well upgrade.

Full time 229,242 Part time 207,231
you would need a flip kit for a D300, pass. side drop.

The 229 is also chain driven. I don't mind losing the full time b/c I'd rather have my axles locked together. Someone told me the 242 would require major adaptation b/c when they switched to the 4.0 they also switched to the AW4 tranny. A yard I go to has a 207 from an '84 2.8 manual. I'd think that would bolt up fairly easily. And yes I know Atlas, Atlas, Atlas. But they are money and I don't know if I want to upgrade this Jeep that much. I'd like to wait until I have an XJ 4.0L or a CJ or YJ.
