View Full Version : 1971 p/u axles
what axles would be found in a 1971 ford, all i know is that it was 4wd and it had a 390 in it. i searched, and found that a 71 bronco would have had a d-44 and a nine inch. were the trucks the same?

1/2 ton-coil sprung HPD44/28 spline 9" (i think the rear 44 was still an option in '71, but don't quote me on that)
3/4 ton-leaf sprung LPD44HD standard/LPD60 optional/D60 rear
1 ton-leaf sprung LPD60/D60
'71 front axles will have drum brakes and the 44HD and 60 will have closed knuckles, the HP44 will have open knuckles.
The 1/2 ton has smaller u-joints than the following 44's, and in '71 it could either have balljoints or the "mini" kingpins, it was the changeover year.
They're not really the most desirable of axles in stock form, but are good bases if you're planning on stuff like crossover steering where you have to swap to jeep or chevy outers anyway.
