: 22RE temp gauge sender location...?

I THINK I'm having some cooling (well, heating actually) issues with the 22RE in my 4runner. I've replaced the stock temp gauge with an aftermarket gauge and I do not believe the accuracy of the gauge is an issue. I have the temp sensor for the gauge mounted in the thermostat housing where a stock temp sensor used to be, on the radiator side of the thermostat. It was my understanding that this is where the sensor for the stock gauge mounts, and the sensor used by the EFI system was elsewhere on the head.

Is this correct? Or does having the sensor located there give me a false reading?

During a hard drive on the freeway the engine might get all the way up to 150 degrees, I get little heat from the heater (core is known to be in good shape) and stoping and putting my hands on the engine does not feel like it's up to mormal operating temp. I've replaced the thermostat with a spare (180 degree, used) with no noticeable change, so I'm not entirely sure its a stuck thermostat.

Thanks for any ideas guys,
Tate

Hello Tate, Sorry to hijack your thread. I sent you a cashiers check for a pair of V6 Toyota calipers about a month ago. Im wondering if you received the check? I've tried to reach you by PMs with no response. Please let me know if youve received it and are going to send me those calipers or my money back.

Thank you
Kevin

the temp sensor for the factory guage is on the other side of the t-stat, between the t-stat and the firewall. it is on top of the intake manifold, and has a blue connector going to it. in this location you get the temp of the water before it goes into the radiator, which is more accurate.

Apparently I had a stuck thermostat, as well as one that was rated too low. for informational purposes the EFI apparently doesn't get out of open loop mode untill engine temp hits 185, so we'll see how this affects performance and mileage...

Brocbronc: D'oh! I appologize for being a flaky retard, your calipers are on their way, I'm PMing you the tracking number.

Tanman: thanks for the info, I'll go ahead and leave the temp sensor where I have it (it would be a PITA to move,) but I can definately see the thermostat opening and closing in the temp. reading.
