: roll cage design
surveyboy 01-29-2002, 05:09 PM Hello,
I am preparing to install a full cage on my CJ-7 and found two that I am considering.
one:MORE Cage (http://www.mountainoffroad.com/catalog/SportCages/cage.htm)
two:kentrol (https://www.4wd.com/Shop4wd/ProductDetail.asp?ProductSku=7686)
My main question is: does a curved front bar make a difference?
then MORE kit has a straight bar from top to bottom, and the Kentrol kit has a curve in it to go closer under the dash. does this really make a difference?
The number of welds are equal just the design is alittle different.
I am going to be getting the frame tie in kits for it as well as 2 additional spreader bars.
I don't do any hardcore rockcrawling just easier trails and I get some balls once in awhile. I am looking to put one in so my jeepchick and I are safer if I roll it.
thanks

I know the curved bars make it easier to get in and out. To really answer your question though we will need PICS

Scout Dude 01-29-2002, 05:33 PM As a roll cage fabricator...I'm going to have to agree...we need pics of your Jeep chick:D
scottv 01-29-2002, 07:13 PM yea Jeep Chick
crawlin'YJ 01-29-2002, 09:06 PM The strength of that point where the curve is, is not as strong as one that goes straight down. I don't think it makes it significantly weaker, but I never even knew Kentrol made a cage. Tennesee Off-Road and MORE make some pretty good cages-Iwould stick with them.
Cutter 01-30-2002, 06:05 AM no more answers till we see jeepchic pic's!:flipoff2:
surveyboy 01-30-2002, 07:56 AM Ok ok, Heres my Jeep Chick in front of our means of trasportation at a local trail.

alright, now about the cages....
If you look really hard, you'll see a Mustang in the background.
I used the MORE cage on my old YJ. It was fine, but made getting to the parking brake a PITA. I'd image the kentrol one, getting closer to the dash would be even harder.
The straight tube should be stronger then the bent one, but either should be sufficient for a low speed rollover.
scottv 01-30-2002, 08:16 AM a straight pipe is stronger then a bent pipe that stands to reason. However functionality weighs in here. With the bent cage it is eaier to enter and exit the vehicle. The question should be.........Will the bend remove enough strenght to endanger yourself or your passenger........I doubt it. I would get the bent one. NOW do you have any pics from like the beach or the pool or something
Cutter 01-30-2002, 08:36 AM a bent tube is still stronger than most peoples (my) booger welds:flipoff2: think gussets!...now where are them pool pic's?
Sillyneck 01-30-2002, 08:44 AM drive to chico...give me $$$ and I'll make you
scottv 01-30-2002, 08:47 AM Nice Cage

surveyboy
thanks for the info everyone
scottv 01-30-2002, 09:05 AM we are waiting
surveyboy 01-30-2002, 09:10 AM Sillyneck, that's a good lookin' cage. to bad chico is at the other end of the state. I don't know if I could convince the jeep chick of a road trip that long though.
surveyboy
Nivloc 01-30-2002, 09:34 AM The bent tube will be will be stressed somewhat higher do to the eccentric loading condition caused by the bend. The bent tube cage would also fail before the straight tube one in similar load conditions, but the difference probably isn't that great.
surveyboy 01-30-2002, 01:09 PM Well during lunch I went the local off-road shop and orded a smittybuilt front hoop and 4 spreaders total for $140. It should be here tomorrow. it has the bend in it similar to the kentrol one to accomadate for the dash pad.
thanks for the help
more questions on the frame tie-in to come soon!

geberhard 02-06-2002, 09:07 PM Great topic, chicks andf cages make a great combo! Hey, do a search for Boston Mangler's cage setup. He did a very good job, utilizing a stock YJ cage 92 and welding the front hoop from a CJ cage from JCWhitney catalog I think. I am selling my stock cage if you are interested to build on it ;)

gipper 07-18-2003, 10:57 PM That TOR cage is 1.75" .12 tubing. The Kentrol is 2" .12 tubing. What size is the Smittybuilt, and does anyone know what size the stock rollbar is?

holly blast from the past!!! Stock bar is 2" and so is the smitty built. I foget the thickness though.
Cue-Ball 07-19-2003, 12:25 PM Shit surveyboy, you were a newb back when this was posted.

gipper 07-19-2003, 01:06 PM I know where the search button is, and I'm not afraid to use it. :flipoff2:
By the way, I like the idea of using the same size tubing. Using smaller tubing just looks funny. Are those Smittybuilt spreaders bent like the Kentrol?

lol, well at least you searched!!
alot of folks use the smaller tubing to keep inside if they have a hard top. I don't so, it didn't matter.
the smittybuilt spreaders are pre-fished mouthed on the shorter side past the bend and then the long side about 2-3" longer so you can cut to fit. pretty easy to do if your patient. they are the same thickness as the main bar, I am trying to remeber what exactly they are but, I do remember that they are the same thickness dom that everyone always wants to use.
I used three spreaders on mine and it seems to work well, luckly I havent had to use it yet.
gipper 07-19-2003, 08:54 PM Oh yeah? :( So the smittybuilt DOES NOT fit under a hard top? I think all of the others are suppossed to aren't they?

well let me back up. I don't 100% know if the do or not. I know that you could cut the front hoop a tad shorter to clear the top of the window frame. I also recall someone telling me that with almost any front hoop if you have hard doors with window cranks, you have to open the door to use them.
but, like I said, you could cut the legs of the front hoop (you will have to do it anyways, they are a little longer than necessary) and check fitmant before welding. I don't know how the spreader bars affect the top, but worst case you could get some tubing and use straight spreaders, and that should work.
