just wondering, how much lift/cutting for 33's? Are there any easy cheap lifts like tj coils or something?
also it's an auto, thinking it will be okya but are they weak?
what should i look for on a jeep like this when buying?

i think you need 4.5" of lift and some trimming to fit 33s.
I wouldn't worry about the auto, the aw4 is a good trans and it can take lots more power than the xj has, it is used in supras with high hp all the time.

I run 4.5" of lift and some trimming with 33's, mine is a four door though.

I, like deadmeat, have 4.5'' of lift but on 32's. I think I can easily fit 33's and with proper bumpstops, 35s. You can run 33s on the stock height, but you need bump stops. It all depends on how big your bumpstops are, and how much backspacing you have on your wheels. Keep in mind, that because the XJ is a unibody, the rear fender wells can not be cut to far without major modification to the interior. The front you can cut till your sawzall burns up, but the rear, you can only cut about 1-2''. Also, it is a pinch weld, so you would be better off folding it instead of cutting. You can go over to naxja.org (http://www.naxja.org) and seach there. They have a lot of info, as it dedicated to Cherokees.
Here are some pics of my XJ. They are not updated on where I cut, but I have cut about 2'' about the stock flare, and I am still rubing on the fender in the front.

I would look for misalignment of the doors and body panels, especially around the tailgate. Signs of the unibody being tweaked.

My brother has 5.5" on his '93 and it fits 33's very nicely. He has cut the fenders an inch or two all the way around and can still stuff the meats up into the sheet metal. It needs some bump stop work done.

I am working on my '85 2 door. I made some fairly good progress on rebuilding my rear fenders this weekend after chopping them out. The goal is to get som 39.5's under it. Although this is farther than you are looking to go, I still think it is pretty damn cool. :flipoff2:

Here's mine with a 3.5 RE lift, and trimmed fenders. I am running 33x9.50x15 tires and I get a little rubbing.
