Been trying to dig up info on options for electric cooling fans, whats out there ect ect.. Been looooking at summit, and found one made by jet.. But was wondering what else out there was available.. Doesn't have to be adjustable, and don't really like the kind that has to be mounted to the rad.....

I'm putting dual 16" on my DD. I went down to my local parts guy and he showed me electric fan switches that screw into a water port. I'm setting up one to come on 190 and them off a 180 and the other will come on at 197 and off at 180. They both will come on when the A/C is turned on. The switches are made by Wells and are 1/2 npt with a 1/4 spade for the wire, There in the 18-22.00 ea range. You do need to have them trip a relay , it not a good idea to pull all the amps thru them.

I bought the one from summit. You don't need the whole kit, just the replacement thermostat. Works great. The sell 2 switches with different on/off ranges.

I just looked, the one I bought is made by painless wiring.

Kit Part #(website and catalog have the part# switched)
prf-30102 185/170
prf-30103 200/185 ( the one I bought)

Relplacement thermostats
prf-30110 185/170
Prf-30111 200/185

Temp ranges are not part of the part numbers.

BTW, what did that kit cost???

The kits are $60 which is kind of outrageous, and the replacement thermostat is $33. I just bought the thermostat, and used my existing wiring and relay. It's definately better than those stupid things you have to shove in your radiator hose.

You can enter those part numbers at the summit website. They give a picture of the kit. The replacement thermostat comes with the pigtail for wiring.

What about a switch to flip on that will turn the fans off while driving through deep water....?

I would like to set this up so that the fans come on with a combo of the key and a thermostat....and then be able to flip a switch and turn them off. The key is I want to be able to flip the switch "on" to kill the fans. I am guessing this could be done with some funky relay wiring....? Suggestions?

Come on, put a regular damn switch between the ignition and the fan or relay or whatever. This will cut the power when you want to. Switch off = closed circuit/ Switch on = open circuit

Or Avalanche or Dynacrap sell a switch for $250 complete with mounting nut. :D

I had to.....:flipoff2:

Whatever ya do don't get one of those thermostats with the sensor that feeds through the hose end. You'll be lucky if you can keep them from leaking! I use a manually operated switch.:skull:

Thanks Pig....Yes your suggestion would be the simplest. However, not really what I would like.

I am thinking I could get a multifunction relay from Radio Shack. Seems like they have some that have multiple pins. Something like is one pin is hot, another pins goes off. Really simple I would think.

Then again...maybe you idea would be the best. I’ll give it some thought. What I like about my idea is I could wire up a light that comes on when the fans are OFF. This could serve as a reminder to turn the fans back on.
:D

I hear ya. I can't think right now how to do the light on when circuit is open. I will chime back in if I can think of how to do that.

Come on kevin..

use a SPDT switch and feed the light from the other contact
1 = device
middle = power
2 = light

Light gets wired in ground to the light and power from the switch

the only thing you switch is the power
between the device and the light

Three way switches can come in handy for a lot of stuff too.

early 90s lincolns and some hd taurus have a great 2-speed fan. OEM quality, it pulls alot of air, cost less than $50 at the boneyard. You can probably get the t-stat from the same car. It's the unit with a very flat pancake motor and about 12 or 15 curved blades. It comes with a plastic shroud ,but I built mine into an alum shroud.

You mean one of these :D

these are popular among the v8 ranger crowd. I finally got my hands on one. Still need to hook it up though. I'm currently running some fan from somthing???? I have no idea what's it's from. With the griffin Radiator, it rarely comes on anyway.

These fans are bitchen though. Very compact motor, and the 2 speed thing is cool!

I never realized those fans were THAT good.. I bought one awhile back for $10 at pick and pull.. once little piece of plastic was cracked off, so someone dumped it.. well, i bought it, bolted it in my 772wd, and ran around with it.. though it draws ALOT of power... I orignally had it wired directly to the fuse box, and MELTED THE FUST BOX with the fan on low power.. heck, with a 6cyl radiator, a 360 small block, and that fan on low power, I could do anything on a 110 day and never worried.. damn.. Maybe I need to take that fan and put it on my 96 ram, wadda ya all think?

Well I just checked 2 back issues of the summit mag, and the one I ordered was circled. I also just checked the website again, and everything was matched up.....I guess I was on :smokin: :smokin: the first time I looked.

Anyway, the part numbers are as follows, from the 3 different issues, and varified against the painless website.......

Kit Part #'s $59.69
prf-30102 200/185
prf-30103 185/170

Relplacement thermostats $32.95
prf-30110 200/185 (the one I bought)
Prf-30111 185/170

BTW.....I'd like to give summit a 2 thumbs up. I've bought quite a bit of junk from them. When I was gathering parts for my 302 swap, I bought a $200 dual flex-a-lite fan. It bounced around my garage for 3 months, I robbed some electrical connectors out of it, and the box was trashed (UPS left it on the porch in the rain)

Well when I got down to doing the swap I realized I should have spent the money on a good radiator(Griffin $180) and used a junkyard fan($20), instead of an expensive fan and an ok radiator.

I called them up, and they said no prob, send it back. I tried to replace the pieces I had used, and sent it back nearly 3 months later.......Bought the Griffin from them instead. I've also returned a few other things that didn't work out, never any problems. Always fast shipping too!

Yep, That's the one...Very heavy duty for a elec. fan.
Mine was drawing alot of amps and tripping a 35a (or was it 50a ?) circuit breaker, I found a bad connection, and it fixed it.

Are you using both speeds? How is it wired.......I'm almost positive the low setting will be more than I will ever need, but I still want to wire in the highspeed some how......

I'm thinking maybe wire the highspeed to the thermostat, and put low speed on a switch so I can run it when I'm crawling through the rubicon this summer :D

I dunno I haven't really decided what I want to do yet. I'm waiting to install it after I cut out the inner body and build a new rad support.

I use high in the summer low in winter. It's wired direct whenever the ign. is on it runs, but my circuit board can be reached from the seat, so if I have to crank on it or pull the winch without the engine running , I just unplug it...
You would need 2 relays and a SPDT switch to use both hi and low. You could also wire a SPST switch ahead of the t-stat for running with the fan off, the t-stat would feed the hi/lo switch, which controls the hi or low relay. I'm sure it could be made more complicated, if someone wanted to.

Thats what I got for my pro street S10. Use the switch for the ground on a relay that turns the fans on and off. If you want it to run when the truck is running or not wire it up to a constant hot. If you want it to only run when the truck is running wire it to a switched hot.

I assume the taurus has two thermostats? Or do you know if they have some kind of trick combo t-stat.

I guess I could have the HI/LOW controlled by a 3way on/off/on switch. In fact that's what I think I'll do.....I can't think of a reason to have an override to keep the fan on.......yeah this will work killer, run high when crawlin, and low for normal driving. Thanks for the idea

ON--HIGH (auto)
OFF---OFF(water crossing)
On--LOW (auto)
