OK, anybody know a secret to remove the bearings off a carrier. I am installing a spool in a DANA 44 Rear. I put the bearings on and didn't put any shims in. (i know) Anyway i need to get the new bearing off without damaging them.
Hey sorry I'm so dumb but I am here to learn.
Thanks

Man, I'm glad you asked this, because I'm an idiot too. I'm tearing down a D44, and trying to remove the old bearings off the carrier to hone out for use setting up shims on my new one.
Take a look at your carrier (spool) on the back side of the bearing are there two cut groves that a puller finger could grab the back side of the bearing? My carrier has that, and I'm guessing, if I go down to my friendly autozone, I'll be able to rent a puller to try and pull them off. Of course this is my best guess, I'm sure somebody out there can confirm or disprove it :)

You need a bearing separator, or the special tool that fits in the two notches. Bearing separator is cheaper and easier though. Here's how I did one recently with a separator plate and no press.
Grab a large center hole 8 lug wheel, flip it upside down. Put the carrier through far enough to drop the separator down around the bearings and seat it flat in the wheel. Prop the bottom of the wheel off the floor with wood blocks. Throw a bunch of nice soft padding on the floor under the carrier, snug the separator tight but not too much so. Find a socket that fits on the end of the carrier.
Smack it!
If you set the separator plate right it won't hurt the bearing.

Be careful using used bearings for setup bearings if you put the used bearing in the usd race and clamp it in a vice and mic the thickness you may find it is .001 or.002 thinner than a new one. Just keep this in mind when you set the preload and backlash. Some used bearings don't show any measurable wear at all too.

They are new bearing and new races. I am just trying to remove them without damaging them. So I don't have to buy new ones.
Thanks
