didnt find much on search as far as TJ goes....

anybody ever make their TJ tailgate flop down (CJ style) instead of swing out?

i need to do this to cut out more of the fenders / rear quarters for more tire trying to fit 44's on a TJ moving the axle back 8", Fuel cell in back but the @#$%@$% TJ hinges wont let me cut enough out of the rear tub

i had the Cj tailgate on mine held on with four sheetmetal screws...of course all that metals gone now!I've seen a site with a clean CJ on TJ mount. But I had to get a new modem yesterday and I lost all my old files. He used stock hinges and cables, made brackets at the top (inside)to secure it closed. He even used the CJ swing out tire carrier. Nothing you can't handle. I'lllse if I can find that site, i'll PM you if I do.

i have a yj that i made the tailgate work like a cj. i did it cause i used the ave comp corners. all i did was bolt some 3/16 flat steel over the existing tailgate and put hinges on the bottom and latches on the top, i dont think i have pics but ill look

My conversion. I've since added a second cable since these pics were taken.

To those in the know,

Do you think it would be possible to do it like Nasvik (CJ gate on a TJ), but to graft the TJ's OE latch and key assembly to the CJ gate?

I dig the look of the CJ gate as well as the flip down functionality, but having a locking assembly as well as a latch that I can get at with my hardtop on would be a huge plus.

should be do-able. My TJ tailgate and hinges are now on a buddies YJ. Just drilled some new holes. The TJ latch on the tub is a bolt on part, so should be an easy install.

crawlinTJ: How did you attach the hinge to the body? Just screws or bolts? What? If screws, has it held up ok?

Thanks Phil:usa:

I have a cj5 style gate if you need one.....the hinges just bolt on and the latches are universal, they will lock on to any thing...It just needs two cables.
oh and the hinges are designed for quick removal of the tail gate...the following is a pic of what it looks like...(mine don't have the tire mount...)
