: Tip testing - how do you find max angle
Belly Dragger 01-30-2002, 09:40 AM Well like th esubject line reads... How do you find your maximum angle you can sideslope before you tip over?
I know some of you have tube rigs or beaters or just don't care if you lay it on the side so you don't count. :p What if you don't want to do damage but would like to see what your roll over angle is.
FatKid can't answer this one as I know he rolls just to wax the underside. ;)
I'm thinking some way to lift a side up with scales on the tires to see where it get's light and secure it somehow to make sure you don't accidently do a :bender:.
Keith 01-30-2002, 09:55 AM Roll it over in the sand!
H8monday 01-30-2002, 10:07 AM I used to go out to an area with soft loamy deep ruts. I would just drive it up one side of the ravine, untill it would flop over. The other side of the ravine keeps you flopping to far or too hard, and you can usually just turn your tires and drive right out of it. I flopped it over one time, to try and knock a busted axle shaft spline out of the carrier, just tipped it over and strated whacking on the housing with a hammer,.....It didnt work though.
steelman 01-30-2002, 10:39 AM seen this in a mag a few years ago, always wanted to try it but never did.
take a yank strap hook it up to some ones truck, run the other end over the top of the cage from the pass. side to the driver side. just above your head. then run another one (yank strap) from another truck over the cage to the pass. side of the cage. just above the pass seat. then you sit in the driver seat. have the truck that is on the driver side of your truck start to pull away from you. have the other truck start to back up. go slow, maybe even use the trucks winches instead of moving the trucks. would be more comtroled. anyway keep doing this untill you feel that it would roll unless the truck backing up was not there. i bet it would lean WAY more than you think it will before it would roll.
i think i just mite do this soon. i have put my bronco on its side 2 times but it happend so fast that i couldn't tell where the "point of roll" was.

That's exactly what I would suggest.
The problem is, finding a tipover angle on flat asphalt will not really help you on the trail. The conditions of front/rear tip, left/right tip, traction of tires on ground, engine torquing, and a million other things will make your effective angle less than the "street" angle.
Best bet is find a good area, and have a spotter or three around, then try to get it on it's side. The spotters can give you an idea when your getting too close...if the pucker in the seat doesn't tell ya first :D
Gordon 01-30-2002, 12:43 PM just go wheelin and have some fun. After a while you will know or else you won't care about body damage much anymore and you can find out.
GloNDark 01-30-2002, 12:55 PM Where do I stand in all of this?? :flipoff2:
All I can say Mike is......if you want to keep it some what nice, and fairly straight....let's build an Exo cage on Mr Suzi. I tried keeping mine nice....and look what happens....3 times now!! hahaha Can't wait for the full widths.......can't freaking wait!

You know that may be a good place to find out, if you went the other way it won't be so bad.

That would be the place. I know of a few places you could "Gently lay it over" and walk away with minimal damage. Hey maybe we can take it out before that side gets finished. :D:D We can test it real good then!

Shoot me over a front/side angle of the suzi and I will come up with something. Wait till you see my plan for the cruiser....is it a buggy? Is it a cruiser?? HHMMM :D:D:D
mytzlflick 01-30-2002, 01:30 PM run it up an rti ramp untill it flips, use a tow strap to a vehicle on the high side to prevent it from actually ending up on the side.
I know from my learning curve that it takes a lot to put one on the side, always feels like you'r going over and then you push on it and find its still ok.

SSSRodeo 01-30-2002, 01:48 PM Hey Michael, I would suggest you find a fork lift with the forks that tie to the bottom of the lift rail as well as top. (Some forks are hung only at the top and will pivot up under load.) Chain the Amigo Frame to the forks and start raising on one side at the boulder bars. Use a safety line to the bottom of the Fork lift rail just in case. Get it about where it starts getting tippy. Don't forget to use an angle meter on the hood for acuracy. Oh, and don't forget to get in so you'll know what the left side Too Far angle is. I'm betting it will be less than the right :D
You might want to load it up with the spare on the roof rack too! And all that other junk you carry.
Me, I just used the Canyon wall at Moab. But I only tested the left side. I know the right side will go farther! It was more than my 30deg angle meter would go.
