: TJ Automatic Tranny Upgrade ?
Merlin_57 01-30-2002, 09:52 AM I lurke here so sorry for the low number of posts but I need some serious tech advice before I proceed. I need to pull the tranny to diagnose leaking atf at the front of the bellhousing. I figure its the convertor seal or maybe the pump seal and the repair is not a problem.
My question is that while the tranny is out, should I be looking at installing a shift kit? Any benefits associated with this or is a waste of my money? I have not been diappointed with the way the tranny operates and its seen the Rubicon and Johnson Valley amongst other places with no problems in either operation or reliability to this point.
If I were to only change one thing it would be lack of compression braking but I am not sure if going to a manual valve body will serve me well at all - the Jeep still ocassionaly gets driven on the street with me putting about 5000 miles on it last year.
Do either of these 2 mods make any sense or should I just repair my seal, service the thing and go back to doing what I was doing without wasting any of my hard earned duckets? Thanx in advance.
redruM 01-30-2002, 11:02 AM i would:
a) tranny kit (trans pak) or (younger)
b) Deep Pan
c) remote filter
d) tranny cooler (if yours doesnt have one yet my 98 does have one)
e) fix your seal
WHEEL
The Rockslut 01-30-2002, 11:36 AM I have the 999 auto in my 94 YJ. i have installed a deep pan, remote filer with temp gauge kit (Jegs) and a Large cooler. I will be installing an electric fan that is dedicated directly to the tranny and will be activated off of tranny temp.
I am still trying to decide on what shift kit to go with.
Merlin_57 01-30-2002, 11:49 AM I'm running a 2nd tranny cooler on the return line back into the tranny from the radiator along with a Mopar deep sump pan. Fluid and filters have been attended to on a regular basis. I intend to fix the seal but am questioning the merits of additional upgrades and whether or not there was any benefit experienced or livability/drivability issues. I would be interested in additional info on the Younger Bro's shift kit - this is the 2nd time it has been mentioned to me and I am curious as to the benefits experienced. I basically rockcrawl in the desert with the Jepe and its trailered to events. Thanx for the replies so far.
redruM 01-30-2002, 12:05 PM no not the younger bro's
Gill Younger... arround Dallas was a tranny builder (race mostly) but he developed kits for various tranny's not exactally shift kits more like "it should have come this way from the factory kit) my first experience with one was in a 98 GMC V8 auto 60K miles it just felt like it had lost some power..nothing really wrong with the tranny.. i took it in fro a tune up (motor) and didnt help i told the mechanic and he suggested the younger kit. they installed it (a little more advanced than a shift kit) 350$ later i could roast the tires if i punched it at 30mph (never could do that even when it was new)... i have since put one in my TF999 and had similar power increases (36"x12.50's are hard to spin on the street) but i do get very seamless shifts (helps out the locker) and off road i get better throttle response.

ozarkjeep 01-30-2002, 02:09 PM its likely the vent, its right above the pump on the bellhousing leaking, OR the pump bushing has failed causing the seal to fail also.
not too big of a deal to replace, just make sure there isnt a groove worn on the converter nozzle, if it happened recently itll be alright, if its been wobbling for a while itll have a ring worn in the nozzle.
the bushing is a $10 at a tranny shop, the seal is under $10, its actually pretty simple to RnR once the tranny is removed.
Merlin_57 01-30-2002, 02:32 PM Thanx but its not the vent - that was the first thing I checked. I appreciate the advice on the repair though, that sounds more like the cause. Its only been dripping for a week and I haven't driven it but once so it should be a simple r&r on the bushing.
kodak 01-30-2002, 06:31 PM ok, no one said it.
PICS I wantto see pics
oh and price would be cool too.
redruM 01-31-2002, 07:47 AM Tranny kit as described above is 45$ for the TF-999
i am checking on the cherokee tranny's but price should be close to the same the tranny mechanic said that his install time is 7-8 hours (less if you pull the tranny)
i can ship kits for 45$ + Shipping
Carryout Tranny with kit $ 310.00
Bring your Jeep in complete $ 375.00
The Shop is in Lewisville Tx. called Unique Concepts
i am not guaranteeing this kit will fix your tranny if your tranny is broke it is not a complete rebuild. i will say it gave mine a lot more power in all gears

RokStar 01-31-2002, 05:34 PM I put a Transgo Kit in my TF999
This is one of the very best mods my Jeep has got!
The kit sells for $89 and you have to rework
the valve body.
It is a little tricky, but not rocket science
to install.
Any trans shop can order one for you, they may
even have one in stock?
No need to pull the trans either, but you will
have to remove the entire valve body.
And yes the kit has instructions!
It is night & day difference with the Transgo kit!
You end up with firm shifts, longer shift points,
and when your done drilling on it it will run
much cooler cause it will pump lots more fluid.
Get one! Transgo part# HDTF999

ozarkjeep 01-31-2002, 07:17 PM I put a transgo kit in a 727 years ago, it was under $30 from Dana at pro-built trannys in Cali, dude is the shit about these particular trannys, I spent hours on the phone with him, lots of trick ideas, and cheap mods for TF trannys.
BUT I dont think you need, or will actually beneifit from much other than possibly the shift kit, and that my or may not be compatible with teh newer trannys, are they electronically controlled?
is the lock up elec controlled?
does it still have a kickdown linkage to downshift?
I know very little about the TJ trannys.
Cutter 01-31-2002, 10:00 PM nah, tj trannys are dinasours:D
