Have a 454 chevy with 10 1/2 compression and pushing about 425 horse. What would you recommend for a carb. It use to have a edelbrock 750 performer but the aluminum housing cracked. This is my 1 ton mud truck. Stick with the same carb or try something new? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks butch.

Factory high horsepower big blocks ran Holleys. The reproduction Edelbrock Q-Jet is good, but I think 425 HP in a mud truck would run much better with a Demon or equivilent.

Go with a holley/demon. They are much more tunable and are probably the best way to go, unless you can afford injection. For a 10.5:1 mud truck, I'm guessing you're not too worried about drivability, especially low rpm, so keep it simple and stick with a carb

If its only a mud truck I'd throw an 830 cfm Holley HP on it. I personally dont like demons. Ive had a couple and could never get them anywhere near as consistent in power or drivability as my holleys. If It was a street drivin rig that saw mud only a little bit I'd throw the aformentioned 850 edelbrock Q-jet on it. I love my Q-Jets. I have a 795 q-jet on my hot 406 in my 79 silverado and out of all the carbs I've had on it (600 and 750 edelbrock performer square bores, holley spread bore 750, holley 650 square bore, and the 795) the 795 was the best in any condition I've had it except above 7500 ft. then its EFI time. The big qjet made better low end torque and better midrange towing power than the holley. Upstairs the holley ran better though because of the double pumper.
