i'm lookin at getting either a 79 or 81 F250 and i'm wondering a few thing about the axles.

as far as i know the front is a 44 and the rear is a 60, is the front reverse cut? how wide are these things? i'm throwing them under an XJ cherokee, I'd like to know the widths, if they're much wider than 60" you can direct me to something closer to 60" width that would also be easy to find. (but i'm getting these for next to nothing, so i don't mind making them fit)

Are these axles relatively easy to work on and find parts for? i know the ones i'm looking at were taken good care of. They held up to a built 460, so i think they'll take all the abuse my weak by comparison 4.0L can put out.

As far as the brakes go, any problems there? are there certain calipers or such to look for that would be better than other ones?

like i said, i haven't really looked at this truck, it's pulled my jeep out of a "stuck" or two. but it's rotted away now, so he's partin it out, and the only thing left is the frame and axles.

it should have a 30 spline dana 60 rear. If it's a 79 it will have a dana 44 hi pinion, or a dana 60 hi pinion front. If it's an 80 or newer it will have a dana 44 or dana 50 Twin Traction Beam IFS front. The axles will be about 70" wide, and the front is driver side diff. The front brakes won't accept a rim smaller than 16", and the lug pattern is 8 on 6.5" It will take a lot of work to put these axles in your truck. If you are looking for 60" wide axles an EB is right about 59-60" wide, with a driver side diff. They would have a dana 44 front, and a 9" rear with 5 on 5.5 lug pattern. I currently have a set of these in the for sale section with detroits, 4.56's, 4 wheel disk, warn full floater on the rear, and heavy duty shafts in the front with 35" BFG muds if you are interested. These would be a much easier swap to accomplish

over 70" or under 70", i really don't give a damn if they stick out. i've gotta replace most of the body as it is now, i don't care if i have to make it wider. it'll still be cheaper than getting EB axles
i want an 8-lug 44 front and an 8-lug 60 rear because i already have stuff to build them up with. one of those un-pass-up-able deals.

is there anything like the EB that would have a 60 rear? and be 8-lug? or even something else ford? i can't believe that the f250 axles are 70" wide, they sure don't look it.

hell, i don't care how :rainbow: it looks, the wider track will make it more stable anyway. i just gotta make really really big flares out of lots and lots of sheetmetal.

Don't get the '81!!! You'll be sadly disappointed. TTB=IFS. I don't even know how you'd begin to anchor that under your rig w/out a highly custom xmember, and even then it's a pathetic setup for 'wheeling.

the truck he is talkin about has the newer 1980 up body style with a solid front axle. i should really put that axle under my van and make it a 4x4. to much work for a DD.

I thought the 8 lug 44 ford brakes were the same size as the 60 ones? I guess I thought wrong, since I know they won't fit my ford 60 front, heck the 16" rims I have just barely clear the caliper on my ford 60...

Well, actually my front axle IS a Ford RC front 60 (with the huge dual piston calipers) and I managed to grind enough material off to fit 15 inch wheels with 4" backspacing. There is actually very minimal grinding on the caliper intself, but a lot of grinding on the brackets that hold the caliper on. These brackets are about 2 inches wide and I had to grind them down along about one inch of the width. The calipers are not going anywhere.

Send me an e-mail at bbkemps@excite.com and next time I have the opportunity I'll snap some pics and send em to ya. Should be this week sometime, as I have to take it all apart to do the gear install.
