View Full Version : "tightening" ford van tow mirrors???

Well, I just bit the bullet and bought a used 26' class c V10 ford 450 chassis based rv.

It's a clean Georgie Boy Maverick, low miles, big discs, 4.63 axle (Dana 80??). I know it'll be slower going than my hopped up Dodge 3500, but for the distance we go I don't mind trading a little time for crew & family comfort. I figure I can run it a yr and decide which tow rig we prefer and sell the other.

First gremlin I've found is that the swing mirrors seem loose at the pivot point end at the door (where it would fold if you hit something etc.) Is there a way to tighten these suckers? shim a spring or something like that? They are 98 vintage.

Thanks,
Ken

PS for anyone about to warn me, I will be beefing the hitch assy Tomorrow.

Off topic, but i rented a 28ft class c MH this past weekend. It was an 05 with V10 and i have to say i was impressed. Plenty of power, ran it 65-70 and got 7-8 mpg. I wasnt towing but have freinds that tow cars behind huge MHomes and they do fine.

looks like the trailer will draft nicely. I have a buddy with a similar setup, he reports hand calculated numbers so good I won't even post them cause I don't want to get flamed. Truth is my hopped up Cummins gets 8.5-12 pulling my 8500 lb enclosed depending on speeds and headwind.

Mostly flat going to the SC, we'll have a gentle first trip. I took the edge box off my dodge to ease me into things.:)

so, how did the RV work out pulling the trailer ?

so much for the flat theory- it was til Cheyenne anyway. While it was nice having the RV the mileage and power was worst than hoped for. It might get by with a flatbed trailer insterad of the enclosed (weight and wind drag). I'm going to look into swapping a cummins in- it would be just right then.

And no, If I'm going to go through all the work I'm not going to put a stroke in it- why settle?

I would never put a PSD motor when you can have more power/reliability with a Cummins. Good choice Ken.

Nope, but I'm not sure I want to sell yet, let's talk in a couple days.

Ok. Just PM if you decide you want to sell it. I'm in no hurry.
