I'm just curious to know what some of you guys have done to stretch your frames. Options are almost unlimited, but I just want to see what's been done.

This one (http://www.sonic.net/jkwaters/Frame_extension.htm) is on the Scwafish Sammy.

Weezynewbie, are you wanting a longer frame, or longer wheelbase? You don't neccessarily have to stretch the frame to lengthen the w.b.:D

I am stretching mine out right now 7 1/2" basically the same way scawfish did

Me too. If the front mount is 7 1/2 inches forward does the tire still "fit" in the wheel opening? or are you cutting your fenders at the same time?

I have heard 7 1/2 is the majic number to keep the tires off of the firewall, but I don't know what it looks like. The people I got the info from , emphasized function.

Your not moving your tire that far forward just the spring mount, cause it uses a way longer spring. The tire fits essentially in the same location at compression, slighty forward at rest. 6.5 ought to work for 33s, 7.5 for 35s.

im assuming that you are useing yj springs? if not what ?

Yep..YJs

02-01-2002, 11:17 AM
I'm going to run YJ's too. Will 7.5" work for 37's? I am contemplating on making mine a 95" or there abouts wheelbase? Any suggestions???

BTW: SCWAFISH- sweet ride!!!

One more thing, SCWAFISH... what length shackle are you running on the front suspension for the shackle reversal???

I'm using coils, so I dont need to worry about spring mounts on the extension. Only reason I need an extension is for bigger winch and mountings power steering box! 7 1\2 " is a good # for extension

Here's a picture of my frame extendtyion with yota axles and while im at it a pic of dual t-case setuphttp://bbs.off-road.com/wwwthreads_uploads/53-674346-27.JPG http://bbs.off-road.com/wwwthreads_uploads/53-672229-jan31_05.jpg

isee now that is dual sammy cases :D hows that working for you?

dparker

yep dual sammy t-case havent had a chance to test yet/try to trash it LOL. theres only two things that i see bad wiht setup now that im pretty much done . the back t-case is droped about 5 inches but im going to make a custom skid plate so hopful i will not have that many problem seeing how its going to be seting on 35's to the other thing is the front t-case is vertiacl and its going to be hard for the top pinion bearing to get oil but with t-caes rebuils a dime a dozen and a 12mmm wrench it want take long to fix also if it does go out im going to look into buy a bearing that can take less oil plus adding a oil slinger like the NP cases have

Weezman-I used 1 inch longer than stock YJ shackles, they are around 4.5 inches long. Thanks for the compliments.

OK, i know i'm bringin this thread back from the dead, but WTF better than not searching right? one question, when you guys say you are extending the frame 7.5" are you talkin about the total length of the extension, or how far you are actually moving the front spring mount. I'm plannin on doin a shackle reversal using YJ springs and toy axles and just tryin to figure out how far to move the spring hanger forward in relation to the stock shackle mount. Thanks, oh and BTW its gonna be running 35s, tryin to fit em with only moderate fender hacking, so as not to ruin those beautiful suzuki looks :flipoff2:

Stinkbug, I like the moderate fender hacking in the rear... Nice work.
Not that you would as obviously you are going a little more extreme than my East Coast rig... But here is a pic of mine from the Zuwharrie BBS with Stock SPOA & TT 2" front shackle with 38" TSL's No body rub, But needs Yota axles and more gear. I've got some pictures of the front sheetmetal work at :

Man that is the way to go!! Low center of gravity and BIG tires. I think you may be on to something Mike :D

opening wheelwell (http://www.geocities.com/redidbull1/wheelwells.html)
this can be done in a day and retains the inner fenders. Once the inner trim pieces are reinstalled over the rear fenders it looks stock.

Stinkbug...here you go. This should make it clear, the numbers have changed a bit.

So scwafish, what you are saying is moving the front axle forward
roughly 3 1/2 inches give or take a 1/4 inch is ideal for tire clearence? I'm going coils this winter, do you think thats going to make a significant difference?

Fish,

Your measurements look to be just about the same as what I recall doing on mine. Looking at my website I see a note that I moved the axle forward 5-1/2". Later I switched to a Toyota rear leaf pack, and that moved the axle another inch or so forward. Needless to say, even with my 37" tires on offset rims, I have no issues with the tires against the firewall. (they do hit the springs though) I really did not want to hit that firewall!

Sweet, thats exactly what I was lookin for. I know I chopped a pretty good ammount of metal out of the rear, but once its all done our goal is to have it look more or less like a full bodied zuk, just a bit longer than stock, like 15" longer than stock :D I dig what whitfield did with the fenders, thats pretty close to what we were planning.

Urban if you are doing coils your axle will not travel in the same arc as a sr leaf spring setup. I have know idea what measurements you'll need but I bet your tires wont travel towards the firewall at all like they do with an SR.

Hey Dallas,

Something's wrong with your message footer.

Sand is for people that built a mutli-pupose vehicle from the start. :flipoff2:

I don't know what mud is.. Haven't seen any for a long time.

On my sami I moved my front axle (toyota) forward about 3.5" (give or take 1/4"), with coils and 35's it doesn't rub the firewall at all and just barely rubs the bottom edge of the front fender.

This is what I did. Mine is the purple thing.
