I am trying to change the 86 grand marq motor to a ho. I have all the right parts except the cam. I am not a big one for using used oem cams and that is what i need to find. Can i buy an aftermarket oem cam and lifeters? I picked one up from the zone and it did not have the roller lifters but just the hydrolic ones. anyone do this conversion? Help with part #'s would be awsome.
TIA

First off, I was unaware that the cam was a roller. But if it is, any place should havee the right one. You need to buy the can for a mustang or whatever the roller motor was in. If it is in an 86 mustang per say, you should be able to buy one at any parts house. Make sure if your block isn't a roller that you have the proper peices to make it one.

I'd suggest a set of 87 heads instead of the 86 ones...
As for the cam, I'd have no quealms using a used OE cam from a 5.0 HO, as they are roller engines, and cam wear is in the minimal to none department.
You should be able to pick up the lifters and spider on E-bay failry cheap, along with a cam.

i had an 84 5.0 and it was NOT a roller motor but yet it was a HO. the only main difference in an HO motor vs a reg is they use a 351 Cam to give you a different firing order. i did the same thing in my truck. when i built the motor in my truck which is a 302 bored .040 i used a 351 cam changed it to a 302 HO

Edit: you can pick up a set of GT-40 P heads anywhere now assembled for about 450$

87 up ho efi are forged piston truck engines with 351 cam and truck heads.

the pistons in the 84 and the heads are worthless in comparison.

you make it sound like you can drill and spider an 84 ho so it will accept an 87 ho cam and it be the same engine.

you would be down at least 35-40 hp and 15-20 tq. they are turds.

hell 87-95 ho's are turds. at least they are over 200 hp.

the exception to this is the 84-85 truck ho. some had a small chamber head. that makes a big difference. huge actually.
