: Price check on aisle 7 (95 FZJ 80)
headhunter2 01-31-2002, 12:41 PM I'm shopping for my FZJ 80.
Found a 95 here in SC. Dark Green, tan leather interior in pretty beat up shape (not that I care.) No locking diffs, 98K miles, everything works, sounds great, good tires, good paint. Has the third row seats but I don't really need those.
It's totally stock. He has a price on it of 18K. The book value I come up with from kelly blue book and Edmunds.com is somewhere in the high 12K range.
Is he tripping on the price or is there something I am missing here? It has been sitting on a corner for sale for about 2 months.
FeCamel 01-31-2002, 06:25 PM He's trippin' for sure. Around here, fully-loaded models in the 94-96 range go for $14-$16k, and they are in mint shape. Right now in the paper there's a 94, 105k miles, 1 owner for $16k. Show him Blue Book and offer that.
12k might even be a little high. How did the motor, tranny, t-case look? DO NOT be afraid to climb all the FZJ80. What ever it is you are thinking of plunking your hard earned cash down for, it is up to you to make sure its worth it!!
We just bought (last summer) a 95 TLC with 89k miles loaded with every option including diff locks, great inside and out, very well taken care of for 18.5k.
Pass on that one it sounds like crap, time is on your side when buying a used vehicale. People who are selling usally want to sell because they bought some thing newer and dont need the extra truck/car. I know it sucks but wait for what you want, it will show up. If you jump right in you will cuss your self when the real deal comes up.
If you really want a better opinion POST PICS of it for us to see.
Bundok 01-31-2002, 07:23 PM 80's are falling like rocks in value in the DC area. Funny thing is some 80 owners don't know that yet. I asked one of the local 80 series gurus what I he thought that I had to pay for a `93 to`95 and firmly stated "at least $18K". Next day I saw some for sale in the 12K range.
A few months ago there was `91 FJ80 for $4500 in the local paper that ran but needed work. I know that it has the 3FE and no lockers, but still. FJ62's seem to have gotten a lot cheaper as well. One sold here last weekend for $3500.
Kind of sad, I can rememer when I thought that I'd never be able to afford a 60 series, much less an 80.

DougM 02-01-2002, 09:33 PM I second the 'don't rush' approach. The auto industry's cheap new car financing has caused a glut of used cars on the market and used prices have dropped like rocks. The 80 set a used car value record for close to a decade but they're not immune to that market force. The one you found seems like an abused one. There are tons of cherry soccer mom garaged rigs with lockers available across the country. My younger brother just bought a '97 (last year for it) with 94k and paid $15,600 on eBay he picked it up Sunday and it was totally sano. Don't rush in this market - pass on something externally uncared for cause you can bet the internals weren't cared for any better.
Old Scout 02-01-2002, 09:50 PM A good way to get a guy to move off of a above blue book price is that your not willing to have the libilaty if the truck is stolen/wrecked.
If you make an insurance claim , the insurance co will only pay high book and if you paid more for the truck tuff beans. Most guys will see the sence and come down.

A while back when I bought my FJ60, the guy wanted $12,500. The bank would only loan me $10,000 (blue book) and when I told him that, he understood. I picked it up that night.

headhunter2 02-03-2002, 06:41 AM Thanks for the advice, guys.
There is a reason it has been for sale for 2 months.
Hersh 02-15-2002, 10:04 PM Just read this post tonight after getting back from buying a new/used 94 80 for the family car. AZ car, original owner, 125k miles, new Mich. tires, radiator, shocks, springs, and PS pump rebuild. Got it for 11.5k. Took off a grand because I noticed there was a decent oil leak (I'm guessing rear main). Anything else to checkout? Trunion (spell?) seals look good. Only real thing that looks wrong is the oil leaking and a rusty exhaust system.
Here is a shot of it (night shot so it sucks)
