It depends on the axle you have and weather you need the rear brakes, if you keep oil in it it will go forever

Well, the thing is in most cases the axle seal leaks for a reason. The Front axle seal will start leaking most of the time because your Spindle nuts come loose. And the Rear axle seal will If your Rear Wheel Barrings are going bad. It will make the alxe move which makes the seal leak.
It is Easy to change a axle Seal. But as Far as the rear Barrings sometimes you can just repack them with grease and Bolt it back up and it will be ok for Temp fix.

Well, if I were you I would pull it it should only be 4 bolts in the back. And what ever brakes are hooked to it. You should have to take apart any of the pad area of the breaks, But I am not sure on the fords. Once you pull the axle out, you can move the bad plate around and see if it is moving around on the barrings it shouldn't be. If it isn't moving around on the Barrings the seal just might be old. But if it is Pack it with Grease and change the seal when changing that seal it may seem like it needs to be pressed in but take something Flat.. like a board and Tap in with a hammer.

Gee do I sound like I have done this a few times LOL....

My 85 250 has been leaking since I got it. 2+ years ago. Since I'm lazy and don't drive it that much, I just slide the drum off once a year and clean the brakes off. Also my does not leak much.
